Re: Rick Perry is a raging idiot.
Hmmm. I don't see why the man's private beliefs, as unfounded as they are, should really affect his viability as a president. Look at his policies, his voting record etc.
As for the science discussion, it's a good one and most of the major points have been made.
The simplest way to describe it is that science is what we use to understand reality. Everything we know about electronics, engineering, biology, mathematics, cosmology, physics and a plethora of other "natural" subjects is due to tge scientific method. In that way, we can ALL agree that while science is NOT 100% accurate it is DEFINITIVELY the best system humans have ever had to understand our reality.
Religion is based off belief, it's not based off science. There's not a lot to say about religion. It's not used to understand reality as much as it's used to understand the supernatural or the philosophical. Religion is not supported by physical evidence, but it doesn't need to be. You either believe or you don't. I don't personally believe in any religion or gods, but I'm not here to judge those to whom religion makes sense, or to whom it provides comfort or reason.
I think it's important to understand the distinction though. You can't ask for proof of religion because science doesn't study the supernatural, science is, by definition the study of nature. You also can't draw an equivalency between science and religion. Science is based off real physical evidence, studies, tests, data, data and more data, religion is based off stories, religion is really something to be taken or left at face value, either the story of a particular religion strikes you in such a way as to convince you, or it does not, a religion cannot persuade you through force of evidence, since the supernatural is outside of the realm of proof.
Anyway I'm rambling and it's late, hopefully this post still makes sense to me in the morning.

So what if, instead of believing in Creationism, he believed in the Easter Bunny. What if he truly believed that a giant magical bunny hopped around the world on Easter morning, delivering candy to children. What if he really believed that the earth was flat, or that the sky was made out of raspberry jello with little sugar stars? These are all exactly as valid as creationism. Would you find it arrogant to call these idiotic?

Your beliefs are a reflection of your thought process. Beliefs like these are indicative of a person who doesn't question, doesn't investigate, or doesn't reason. It's also harmful because these beliefs are harmful. Anti-scientific beliefs, when held by a wide enough group of people, are bad for society. We're a country that's largely built itself on our strong science and strong industry, and if large chunks of the population believe that a fairy tale is a valid scientific hypothesis, then you're going to see further degradation of our status as a leader in these fields.
