If an engineer builds a tower thinking a jet of a certain size could collide with it accidentally, that engineer would also have to assume the jet had fuel in it right? And that fuel would cause a fire and would also interact with office equipment such as chairs, rugs, paper, tables, etc etc. After all, the towers were meant to be office buildings...so wouldn’t it be logical for the engineers to assume they would have office stuff in them? (Again, my tone is completely non asshat, just trying to evacuate doubts I have).
Your thought process is just a hair off. Planes usually dont carry much more fuel then they need for the trip. That being said they would have had to assume a plane hitting the tower would have been landing in New York. Instead what happened is a plane carrying alot of fuel was hijacked and flown into the tower. There was no precedent for that. So there was no need to even consider it.

Exactly. They were assuming that an airplane colliding with the buildings would be landing in New York and would be nearly empty on fuel. Not one person ever though that someone would hijack a cross continental flight and crash it purposely into the buildings. This kind of thought process just never did exist prior to 9/11. Hell it didnt even exist on 9/10/01.

Understood. So engineers never thought a plane carrying that much fuel would hit the buildings.

Funny, because I remember a discussion from my grade school where we learned how Pythagoras and other ancients knew the world was round. Same grade school discussed Columbus' trip to find a spice route through the Americas (which had already been discovered but were not mapped in any way; people had touched down on both sides of the new world before Columbus did, they just did not do it in the name of a country).

Then again, I did go to a city-slicker school that focused on truth over tradition...

Essential yeah there was no reason to even think about it.

They also update books once in a while. I know most of the books i had were published late 70's and that was high school.

Why in a pre 9/11 world would anyone think that an airplane could be used as a weapon in the air. You are assuming that they thought like we do now. Big difference is that 9/11 did not happen yet and was just another date in the 60's. Besides the models and what not that the engineers ran was more of a "lets see if so and so happens." None of it was actually considered as part of the design. Seeing as how JFK, LaGuardia and Newark have take off and landing paths that are directed away from lower Manhattan and no where near it.

I’m not assuming anything. I’m agreeing with deathgod that there would be no reason for engineers to consider a fully fueled plane crashing into the WTC, even worse, on purpose.
