    Re: Are people inherently stupid?

What I read was the question was, "How many trucks are there on the base?" The reason for the question is to confuse the soldier into thinking you are being asked about vehicles, when the real answer they want is one. Notice how the 3 things have variations in all of the stories? That site said there was a grain of rice, so the last soldier could muster some strength. Other sites said there was a razor to cut up the flag, but why cut something you are about to burn. That site also has contradictions on which flags. Is it all government buildings, just military bases, or carried flags?

When you add that to the fact that pretty much any Marine is going to do as you said and use any bullet he can get access to on the enemy means it all adds up to urban legend to me.

Say it with me, "Cool I didn't know that" The best definition of educated is being much more aware of how very little you actually know.

The Garden of Eden was in Missouri, I reads it in me books.

Has anyone suggested rubbing the flag pole vigorously to see if the razor breaks the bullet?

    Retiring old Flags.National Flag Foundation

You don't. This is a garbled interpretation of what they did when Corregidor fell. When the flag was lowered at the hour of surrender, COL Bunker, the officer in charge of the detail, secretly cut a piece of the material which he hid. The flag was then burned to keep it from falling in enemy hands.

While in captivity, COL Bunker cut the cloth fragment in two and gave one piece to COL Ausmus. The intent was that they would eventually deliver the fragments to the Secretary of War. COL Bunker died in captivity. He, along with the piece of cloth secreted on him, were creamated. COL Ausmus survived and delivered the last piece to the Secretary in Nov 45.

This was a spontaneous and secret act by COL Bunker. It is not part of a tradition or SOP or regulation to do this kind of thing. We try really, really hard not to find ourselves in such positions often enough that we end up having to develop standing procedures for surrendering.

    Re: Are people inherently stupid?

I think there's a non-zero chance that all of us here are playing a role in a play titled "Are People Inherently Stupid?"

Perhaps God is the playwright, or maybe it's an improv. Either way, I don't see any of us getting paid the union rate.

    Cheers,

Which was never in question. All of that is gone over in the class as far as the contents the two i distinctly remember going over was the bullet and the matches.

You just prove my point. If it were so vital to being a Marine, and according to some sources every branch of the military, why would there be any doubt about a/the third item?

I am a firm believer in that people don't inherit stupidity, but are actually intentionally stupid.
