Re: Are people inherently stupid?
I think the point is more that you got back what you tried to dish out. If your going to respond as you did then you should fully expect to get shit in return. Odds are they already know the first amendment so pointing it out is just looking for an arguement. I cant speak for the whole conversation but the parts that are present pocess issues.
First one being you trying to say freedom of speach is the first amendment. Yet the only things they said were disrespecting the flag is stupid, there are soldiers fighting that need support, you should be proud to be an american, and if you arent you should leave. You then responded to that with the first amendment allows people to protest of which includes disrespecting the flag and disrespecting the US. Of which he responded to with if you have no respect for the US then why stay and pointed out no one will miss you.
So the second flaw is why did you bring up protesting if the first statement had nothing mentioning protests? I already explained the desicrating the flag and who it really effects. Lets not even get into all these clowns raising it upside down thinking they are using it correctly for disstress.
A better question would have been just how patriotic the people are when they are the desicrating the flag in protest? They claim its being patriotic so just how does that fit? It doesn't. A well thought out responce would have probably been recieved better but either way responding anything that doesn't agree with his stance was just looking for an arguement on the topic. So the question you should be asking yourself is do i want to be as ignorant as the other person.

Re: Are people inherently stupid?
True, and it looks as though you agree with it that it is a protest. What I was originally getting at in the op was that by the first amendment, we can protest. You don't have to agree with the protest(ers) but that doesn't suddenly mean they hate America/the troops/etc. just because they don't agree with the way that government is run.
Also, to post something on Facebook leaves it WIDE open for comments from anyone you happen to be associated with, so to get mad at someone for stating something ties back to the thread's title.

To you its just a piece of cloth with pretty colors on it. To others myself included its the symbolisim of freedom, courage, and honor. Many have died for that flag and it isnt something that should be taken so lightly as hanging it upside dow or burning it for protesting something you dislike. There are plenty of other ways to protest that dont included shaming everyone that died for that flag. Personally i think it should be illegal to desicrate the flag and the person that does it disgraces themselve in my eyes.
