Wasted money?

Kepler-22b: New Planet With Earth-Like Characteristics Discovered In 'Habitable Zone' (IMAGE)

"The discovery of Kepler-22b, which is 600 light-years away from Earth, brings scientists one step closer to finding a planet that could possibly harbor life."

You know i find this stuff interesting but i also take issues with it. Its an interesting find but what point does it serve? How about stop wasting money to find shit we can't get to to begin with and spend that money on finding a way to travel the distance. A planet 600 light years away means dick to us with a way to get there. Now if we had the ship there would be a reason to know but at that point we could just go on a tourist trip.

No one is going to fund a space program to fire ships randomly into space to find planets to live on (since they are all lightyears away). Knowledge of where a planet is will encourage funding for such a program.

I don't think it's wasted money at all. No we will never see it in our life times, but come 5 billion years from now, when the sun sets earth on fire, I'd like to believe that humanity could make the trip. At least now we know where to aim. Who knows what could come of this type of research? Some of the greatest technological advances and discoveries have been made by accident.

Who said anything about firing ships randomly into space? Once you have the means what makes you think everyone here will want to stay here?

I do agree some of the greatest discoveries have been made by accident. Given the advances we have made in the past 100 years do you think 5 million years from now is a concern?

I like it to or i wouldn't have bothered opening the link. However that in itself doesn't justify the expense.

By that logic we can only fly a manned spacecraft to the moon and/or space station, so we shouldn't look beyond that. I sure hope no meteors or asteroids come on a collision course with Earth because by the time we knew it we would all be dead.
