anyway, are they a threat yet? Did they finally manage to lauch a missile that wouldn't crash in the sea a few hundred meters later?

If not, who the hell cares.
Yes. So now should we care?

We don't even like the current gov't of Cuba - but if the Chinese showed up and started actively building a regime that suited their tastes you can bet your ass that the US would take it as more than a little bit aggressive.

Now imagine it if Cuba was physically connected to the US, sharing a 1000 kilometre border. Now imagine it if we've been allies with Cuba for more than 60 years.

North Korea is clearly in China's zone of influence. Anything the US does beyond it's current level of diplomatic involvement is provocative.

I didn't follow the six-party talks closely, but I do know that China isn't always pleased with the nutjobs that run the DPRK - so maybe change is something they'd be happy with too. But I'm pretty sure this will be a case of "No one hits my little brother but me."

Also - I think you over-estimate the US's ability to enforce their political will in North Korea through military means. The terrain is insanely difficult. Even so, for the Chinese to put a million troops in the DPRK is a relatively minor logistical problem. If it came to it, they could walk there. Beijing is only 400 miles from the DPRK.

Could the US put on a good war if they had to? Probably. But what does that entail? Think about where the bulk of our national defence would be. The Russians have a border with the DPRK too. How are the Russians going to feel about a massive American force right there?

What about our allies? For example; I think the South Koreans are more than grateful for the political and military support they get, but they would absolutely shit their pants if we started taunting the Chinese.

What about us? We are just now ending an 8 year war/conflict in a far away place. Popular support for that war (or those wars) was luke-warm at its highest. There was never unified popular support. How are the voters going to feel about an even larger commitment of forces to North Korea? Going to war with China over the political future of North Korea? Seriously - how the hell do you sell that?

    Cheers,

Whats with all the having to use imagination shit? We dont need to use imagination. China already borders several ally nations of ours. Some of which already have US bases in them. Did China do anything? Nope because they know what would happen if they did anything other then bitch.

I dont underestimate anything. A million troops crossing any border from China would have serious consequences. They've already done that twice against us. Times however have changed. This is not vietnam or the korean war. Strategic missile and bomb runs can wipe out as many troops as they wish to send. Troop wise they are past us but tech wise they are behind us. We dont send in troops and call for air support anymore. We send in tech and use troops for clean up.

With that in mind you seriously underestimate the US ability to enforce their political will. We have more aircraft carriers then the rest of the world combined. Along with that is the largest airforce about 14000 more fixed wing aircraft and navy with about 2000 more vessels and twice as many land based weapon systems. All of which are state of the art strategic weapon systems. With that in mind we can bring devistation to any point on a map to include China.

So yeah they have deeper ranks then we do but it will mean nothing when we roll thru. That will be because the first thing we will do is take out all strategic positions. With our stealth bombers at hand no point inside China will be free from our reach.

Our allies like South Korea have been waiting for a chance to return the bullshit they've dealt with. Russia wouldn't do anything. They have a history of half ass commital to begin with. People here are fickle. They forget not a one said lets not do it until after we had already kicked the ass of the Iraqi military.

Im not selling anything. Im just pointing out that China would most likely not take any steps to begin with.

Nukes will not be a factor. The reason being if we engage china in conflict it will be on their land. China isnt going to lauch and we arent going to launch. There are only a few stupid fuckers in question when it comes to launching nuclear warheads.

Your never going to solve all the problems anywhere to include at home. If your waiting to be ready then the day will never come. So might as well get it over with when you have the chance.

DG, you're a prime example why we are very fortunate to have a civilian government.

The military is like a pet that needs to be on a leash and not running the household.

Meh, this will blow over like a fart in the wind. Another sick fuck will take power and then we'll just keep watching and saying, "Man that guy is fucked up!" It'll be business as usual. There are parties in North Korea that may see this as a chance to gain power, but the chance of anything bad happening are probably 1 in 100. Yet, when people start screaming 'what do we do, what do we do' there's always a ton of people who say 'i know what to do' and that brings the turmoil.

Yeah much better to have a corrupt as civilian government then a group with deeply entrenched moral and legal standards. Our civilian government is what makes wars take much longer then they should.

I disagree with the stand point that they are civilian. All have to sworn in, all agree to hold the position in the same regard as the military, and all have an end of duty date with an option to reenlist. The only difference i see is civilians allow them the ability to reenlist if they desire.

Of course all of that would matter if i had said anything to the fact of the military should take charge and go after NK. Yeah i dont remember saying it any more then you remember reading it.

    Gonna add a bit.
To quote ray from generation kill "The Corps are like americas pit bull. You beat it mistreat it and every once in a while you let it out to attack someone".

The last thing people including myself want is the military running the show. However that doesn't mean you can take what i have said in this thread and twist it into me saying what we should do. All i did was state the reality of things.
