This is the only thing I take issue with in your post. It is NOT by definition supernatural when something happens that seems to defy the laws of nature. It is, rather, something we don't understand.

It MAY be supernatural, or it MAY have a reasonable explanation. There's only one way to possibly find out: Study, test, gather data, hypothesize and experiment. Will the scientific method give us all the answers eventually? I doubt it. Is it the best (and as of now ONLY) way to understand as much as we can about reality? I say absolutely.

@Thor, what is your definition of supernatural? The above quote is the dictionaries version, so YES by definition, if it defies the laws of nature then it is supernatural. Now, if you have a different definition of supernatural then I'm all ears.

@Trigger, do you really care, or are you just playing antagonist yet again? I find it hard to believe you give a rat's ass about the religious beliefs of anyone on this planet.

Allow me to rephrase. If it APPEARS to defy the laws of nature it is not by definition supernatural. If you can demonstrate that it conclusively DOES violate laws of nature then it would be supernatural. However, there have been no cases as of yet of unexplained events being proven to defy natural law.

In other words, just because we can't explain how something happens doesn't mean it's defying natural law.

The problem is that it's mostly impossible to prove something is happening because of supernatural forces. As they are outside of nature they cannot be proven in the same way.

I understand the argument you're making Civil, and I think it's a good philosophical one. Practically speaking, though, there is no real application for supernatural as a means of explaining unusual events. Once you attribute supernatural origin to an event you free from yourself all burden of study and understanding. You close the book and say "Magic did it." and therefore, feeling that you have answered the question, are no longer motivated to study and find deeper understanding.

If humans attributed to magic everything they didn't understand or that they thought violated natural law, we would never have gotten out of the stone age. Science has given us the wealth, comfort and technological advancement of western society.

The scientific method is the means by which we advance ourselves and our understanding. Religion is important, but it must be treated as the personal, spiritual belief it is, and not construed as a means of understanding reality or advancing technology.

I'm moderately religious and I love science, the more we know about science the more we know about god and the better we can improve our situation, evolution is no exception despite what creationist say. This isn't some concession in the face of modern evidence, early Church leaders didn't always believe in a 6 day creation story, thousands of years before Darwin even lived.

I'm just curious what you believe. You could answer yes or no.

Christians are attacked so often? Get over yourself. Christians are the largest, most powerful group in the US.

If I was a Christian I would have something to get over and surprise of surprises look who responds to my post.
