Mr. White has the right idea.
I really do need to remodel/rebuild this house.. my fiancees uncle built it in '92. Only problem is, he's a dumbass and that was the first house he's ever built. Don't get me wrong, its a nice home.. but a lot of things are backasswards.
#1 thing that I want done first is the electrical wiring and fixtures. Knowing her uncle and the fact he started running out of funds during the build... I'm just scared shitless that he half-assed the electrical wiring. I mean, some of the flood lights in the ceiling will randomly shut off, and then turn back on a few min later.

I can see why your concerned. I would be as well. If i was in texas i would gladly help you out. Electrical is actually pretty fucking easy. Of course its easier to run it without out the drywall in place but its not that complex with it up. As long as you have a snake its pretty basic. You know the drill just run one at a time. Its not rocket science. The flood light issue could be wiring or depending on what type they are could be the fixture itself.
For the record im not a fan of habitat for humanity because of their practices. They get everything for free and then sell the property to the person but only after they have put in so many hours as an indentured servant.

Flood lights or can lights? If it's a can light it could be an overheating issue easily fixed by clearing whatever is around the can in the attic away from it. This is a common issue when people used blow in insulation or deck over the top of the can. A quick brush aside or a hole in the decking above the can (assuming it's not 2-story) usually does the trick.

Worried or not Everyone should have battery powered smoke detectors in your bedrooms. The smoke detectors that run on electricity are OK but when you don't have power you are not protected. Most of them are electric with battery backup.
Keep in mind the smoke detectors are designed to work when you are sleeping, your nose, eyes and ears are for when you are awake.

When my parents built their house, my brother and I installed smoke detectors in every room. Before I moved I had battery and hard wired smoke detectors. I dont remember that stat but I think it is in the 90%s of fire deaths occur in homes with none or broken smoke detectors.
