if self defense is a concern and first weapon as you stated, +1 to revolver. taurus makes reasonably prices ones, ruger too.

if not so much self defense but more about getting into the hobby any of those named semis are nice.

If merely for home defense and wanting a revolver .. get the Taurus judge. Will solve all intruder issues nicely
