Oh man if you want food this is also the place. Diversity is the word. What isn't popular in San Diego? Chains. Locals do not go to Chili's or Friday's or anything like that. I think we actually only have one of each of those haha. Whatever you want just use Yelp. As far as where to live, kinda of a tough question. So many towns. SD is broken down into neighborhoods/towns. Pacific Beach or PB is a total surfer/college town; very young, lots of bars (and cops because of it). The Gas Lamp downtown is like mostly all high rise condos ($$$$$). Further north and further east is more family oriented. It just depends if you are single looking for night lights and social atmosphere or have a family and looking for a good community for them.

edit: Gaslamp does had plenty of bars as well, forgot to add that. That is the main area downtown with all the night life. You'll see, downtown isn't very big. Probably only takes about 25 min to walk across it.

Yeah, I'm thinking either PB, gas lamp, or Hillcrest area, close to base, lots going on, enough public transport.

I found some delicious Tortas Ahogadas at El Gallito maybe? I wrote it down on my list of things to do. Also, maybe a day trip or overnighter to catalina island for the fish market.

Edit: I guess the market is in Linda Vista

down in the mission beach area there is some sushi joints that buy FOB ahi, blue fin, dorado, wahoo. also some of the local fishing boats will roll you up right off your hook.

you can find good mexican food all over SD(n some not so good), in fact you will in time find your own local "taco shop" you will go to and be used too. in fact when you vist a friends taco shop you will feel like its so alien. old town has some good sit down mexican food, as well as italian food.

we also have a host of local indian casinos that can be alot of fun.
