Lots of upgrades, many of them incremental, but a big one is Maps.

Seems like that Maps thing is going to be a bumpy road for Apple though:

Dont understand why people are standing in line when all the friends I know are getting them delivered today or picking them up from stores that they pre-ordered them at.

I dont get why Applemaps is a big deal, weve had fucking awesome google maps for a long time, why go to an apple version thats not as good?

I'm willing to speculate :)

For Apple, it's because they want to capture the value of maps users for themselves rather than let all that value go to Google.

For users, it's about choice. That can work at a few different levels. The obvious one is that you simply like one better than the other. That can be a purely aesthetic choice (ooo! pretty!), or a functional choice, or some fan-based thing (Apple rules!).

Making the OS gives you an advantage when making Apps. On an iOS device, it's possible for Apple's version to be better than Google's - even if they're not playing anti-competitive games.

Big-picture-wise, I'm happy there's a competitor. I already think that lots of "free" applications are a bad deal for users.

A weird thing about applications like Maps is that they depend on users to improve. Many improvements to the data come from use. That dynamic makes it hard for anyone to enter the market. It's expensive to even get started, and no amount of money can buy the improvements that 7 years of use has given Google. There are very few companies that could start this late and still have a shot.

Apple's new Maps has lots of data issues (but probably fewer than when Google Maps was first out) - but those things will get fixed as users use Maps.

Actually the real new thing would be Augmented maps that are integrated into your phones mapping capabilities.

Given that Nokia's support for the 900 was pronominal from any account I've heard, I'm willing to bet that it works pretty well. I know for sure the 920 will be my next phone come the end of Oct., it just has to many well made features(free on demand music via Nokia Music, Nokia Maps which cover more of the world than Apple and Google, not to mention the camera and all the cool shit it can do)
