new car purchase
I haven't posted here or played on any tpg games in a while, but I do recall there being a lot of gear heads and people who are knowledgeable about automobiles! Since I do not know much about cars I have decided to ask you guys. I might be moving to a new place for a new job pretty soon so I'll need input.
What id like in a car is
-fuel efficient
-basic (I dont need power locks, doors, seat heaters or anything else that could go wrong, im not lazy and i dont want to pay for expensive electronic repairs when a mechanical repair is much easier)
-a decent amount of trunk space (enough for a hockey bag and a suitcase, this probably wont be the limiting factor I'm assuming)
-history of being reliable
-on the cheaper side to repair (ie. domestic parts that don't have to be shipped from Germany or something)
-mostly city driving, with a highway drive 2 hours to home
I'm leaning towards something by the big 3 (Ford Focus maybe?) since I come from a town built on the automotive industry, although Toyota, Mazda all have plants that built cars within the Detroit area so I guess that might not matter either.
If any more information is needed I'll be glad to answer.

Re: new car purchase
I was doing some looking into that price range recently and the Focus is definitely one of the better choices. Mazda3 is also very much worth looking at.
Be sure to check Edmunds.com to do some research. They have their own reviews, user reviews, and also have a neat thing that measures the cost of ownership over five years. They break it out by vehicle cost, taxes, fuel, maintenance, and repairs.

Mazda and ford are the same car. Honestly Wolf it comes down to what you like. Almost all of them are made the same anymore. The key is dont beat the crap out of it and following a the scheduled repairs while keeping in mind it doesn't hurt to do them a bit early.
I know a lot of people like their focus's. There are even a few performance shops for them around here.

Reliable brands:
Honda
Volvo
Toyota
The Honda civic, crv are bullet proof and are great fuel efficiency wise, the accord depends on the year but mostly reliable. Volvo makes fantastically solid cars. Toyota has give through allot but honestly had some good basic cars. My civic '06 has just shy of 200,000 miles on it and carts my photography studio gear every where. Thing is not fast, its solid though.
Honestly the first thing you should check is safety ratings. Watch some crash test videos and you will quickly see that safety is paramount lol...
Have fun and enjoy!

We bought my wife a new Fiesta last year. Great car with great fuel economy, a huge trunk, and a fantastic electronics package in the Ford Sync. The seven years warranty on it means that I can spend my wrench time on fun stuff for my car instead of keeping her's running.
