"The Things They Carried" is hands down one of the best books I have ever read.

    Fact > Fiction.

One of the most riveting stories I have ever read:
We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape an Endurance
By David Howarth (intro by Stephen Ambrose)

A little "The Right Stuff" MEETS A LOT OF "Top Gun":
    Yeager: An Autobiography
    By Chuck Yeager

Otherland is great, but I think the first book is kind of a slog, but man the last three are great.

Chuck Yeager is The Man. Loved that book dex.

Whats "The Things They carried" about?

I can vouch for The Way of Kings and the Mistborn Trilogy, both are very good. You may also want to try The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks. Very neat "magic" system that I found enjoyable.

My highest recommendation at this time is "The Kingkiller Chronicles" by Patrick Rothfuss, 3rd book of the trilogy is not out yet, but I cannot wait to reread the series when it does. Superb story telling that made me stay up waaaay past my bedtime every night until it was done.

A squad in Vietnam and their burdens (from what I understand so far) being 'the things they carried'.

When can I escape? When can I swim to the moon?
