Thread: Vehicle maintenance - advice needed

So, my wife and I noticed our driver side view mirror was shaking a bit while driving the other day. It was obvious to me that it was hanging by a very thin thread. Then, last Sunday it happened, I walked by it and barely touched it and it snapped off. My wife was mad at me saying I broke it, when in my opinion it was pretty much already gone.

Well, it's a 97 Chevy S-10 Blazer. The side view mirrors are electric. The blazer is my wife's baby. She wants the mirror replaced right (by a chevy dealer with a service station I suppose). In other words, she doesn't want me to take the door panel off because I've gone down that road before on another vehicle and everything didn't go back together quite right. In my defense, those plastic clips are crap and once you pull stuff apart, stuff breaks so easily and are loose coming back together.

Anyhow, she wants the shop to install a new mirror. She also wants the shop to order the mirror rather than me ordering something and bringing it to them, you know, just in case there is a problem and we aren't at fault because we brought a part that wouldn't work.

Well, I called a few dealerships with service stations, they all say the mirror is on back order. Could be a week, could even be more than a week before they get it in. The problem is, we were intending to drive the blazer over Thanksgiving to my folks place. Duct tape is out of the question.

So, here's my dilemma:

option A, secretly order the mirror myself from one of the many websites that sell Blazer parts and bring that in to a shop to have them install without telling my wife.
option B, secretly order the mirror myself from one of the many website that sell Blazer parts and attempt the replacement myself.
option C, tell my wife that the OEM mirror replacement is on back order and there's no telling when we will get one....

I'm kind of leaning towards A and B but don't want it to back fire....

I've worked in a dealership, and I suggest buy it yourself have the dealership install. Most times people can get oem for less than dealers as they have a fair amount of mark up. Also the door clips snap easily and get costly quickly! They'll have those on file. Do it as a surprise and you'll be out of the dog house in no time.

Is there a particular online store that you or anyone else would recommend for GM parts? The number of online stores that sell GM parts don't seem to be on short supply...

In my life I have noticed one thing. Its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Do what you gotta do. Better than driving without a mirror and side swiping a car going 75 down the interstate

My step dad works for a dealership in Plano. If you are willing to take it there I could maybe get you a discount if he could do it on the side. He wouldn't have a problem with you ordering the part through him, or anyone else.
