Re: Anyone ever gotten Lasik done before?
I used glasses all my life as well. I think what makes you a candidate is the shape of your eye and the thickness of your cornea, not the degree of myopia or astigmatism.
@alundil about the 5 years thing, if you have the procedure done after your condition has stopped deteriorating than there is no reason why LASIK will only last you 5 years. About the dryness thing, that is TRUE. it doesnīt happen to everyone, but it DOES happen. I feel that in one eye, sometimes it feels a bit dry....nothing an over the counter lubricant eye drops/artificial tears canīt take care of though. It is NOT the same dryness that you get from contacts...I wore contacts and my eyes got so damn dry after about 3 hours use.

Well, the severity of your myopia/astigmatism is typically caused by the shape of your eye. The problem is, even after your vision stabilizes, if you wait too long, you face the prospect of it to start deteriorating with age. Typically, the worse your eyes are in your youth, the quicker they deteriorate as you age.

The thickness and health of the cornea is the main determining factor for LASIK. You could theoretically correct any amount of myopia/hyperopia/astigmatism if you had enough corneal thickness to work with.
LASIK is not generally recommended for people with other corneal pathology like a corneal scar, recurrent erosion, or excessive dryness.
@WileECyte - Vision starts to deteriorate with age due to a hardening of the natural lens and a weakening of the zonules and ciliary body (fibers and muscle that makes the lens flex). The flexing of the lens enables you to "add" + power to your eyes, which in turn lets you read at close distances. As you age, this ability decreases. For people who are farsighted (eyes do not have enough + power) this becomes more noticeable at an earlier age. People who are nearsighted actually have too much + power in their eyes, which is why many of them can take off their glasses to read as opposed to getting bifocals.
