    Save money on razors

So I started shaving my head about a year ago, because of that I spend a good amount of money on razors every month. I saw this advertisement online and decided to try it it out.

If you look here, you can choose between razors from $1 a month plus shipping (I think $2 for shipping), $6 a month shipping included or $9 a month shipping included. I signed up for the $6 a month razor package and figure it may last me the entire month depending on the quality of the razors. I paid 6 bucks for 4 cartridges, so $1.50 each. Other similar name brand razor cartridges sell between $2 - $3 dollars. The main reason I signed up for it is for the convenience of not having to go out and buy razors.

    Here's the ad:

Here's what I received in the mail today:

So I just got done shaving, and the quality of the razor is on par with the name brand razors I have used in the past. I'll just have to wait and see if there going to last as long as the more expensive razors.

Also they have a promotion, for everyone that signs up I get a free month. I'm not sure what the restrictions are but if you do sign up, whatever money I save I'll donate to TPG. You need to use this unique link (copy and paste) for me to get credit for it:

In doing some research, I found this article. Turns out Dollar Shave Club is in all likelihood buying the razors in bulk from Dorco. From the Dorco site, I can buy the same (or very similar) razors (1,2,3) that I just purchased for less than $1 a cartridge as opposed to $1.50. I would just have to spend more than $25 to get the free shipping.

    Dorco advertisment:

Anyways I thought I would share. If you go through a lot of razors like I do, it may help you save some money or at least a trip to the store. I'll report back in a couple weeks to let you know if the razors lasted as long as the name brand ones.

Just ordered me a set of the Dorco (4) Blade set. Im going to give them a whirl and see how they stack up. If they do this is a much better option.

Very interesting... I am pretty sick of dropping $20 for like 4 razor cartridges at the store.

I just made shaving cheaper and shave less of my face... and I only shave once a week with a blade... the rest of the time I use my electric razor.

In addition to places like Dorco or DollarShaveClub, I've noticed a buzz growing around old-school safety razors. Like, the kind your grandfather used.

    Here's an example:

The Best Razors | The Wirecutter

I've seen others articles. It fits into the retro-culture of simple tools and proven techniques. If you want to see more articles, you can find them on sites that cater to hipsters, DIYers, Makers, and the various flavours of Eco-nerd. I'm sure there are other mini-cultures that are into it (perhaps SteamPunk, though they're more likely into straight razors and a leather strop... and if you want to go all-in on that path then you've got my respect).

Anyway, lots of people find the idea of a disposable razor with five blades in it to be ridiculous on many levels and I won't hold it against the hipsters if I happen to occasionally agree with them.

The attraction here is mostly expense. Yeah, $20 for four cartridges is messed up. For a one-time investment in a good safety razor ($34 on Amazon for the one linked from the above site), you move into a world where the very best blades cost $25 for 50 (and they're double-edged), and good blades are $15 for 100.

I guess this used to be the way everyone shaved. There are probably high-quality safety razors sitting unused in the closets of your forebearers.

What I've read says that shaving this way requires some technique, but that the learning curve isn't too bad. I'm thinking about giving it a try.

    Cheers,

    AetheLove

Yeah, there's a whole movement where not only do they use safety razors, but they also don't buy expensive shave gel, they use the old school soap & brush method. The no soap/shampoo/deodorant crowd is growing.

Same approach here. Wife likes the beard. Tried shaving it off once and she freaked.
