Re: Pretend Youre On NCIS
Ah the infamous double hack. Gotta love it.
The story goes that the writers of these shows KNOW what they are putting out there is bad when it comes to computers. And it's a contest to see who can get the worst use of a computer into a show without it getting shot down.
There's SO many good ones. The double hack is one of the best.
I really wanted to find the clip from Bones where... get this...
They have some bones that they put in their uuber tech laser scanner. They are merrily scanning these bones when BLAMMO their computer shoots fire out of it and they run to get a fire extinguisher. Then you hear one of them say something to the effect of "A hacker engraved a virus on the bone and it activated when we scanned it!!"
Yes... That made it through the computers are magic game the writers play with the editors.Last edited by Kanati; 01-18-13 at 08:12 PM.

They almost always get it wrong if they use computer stuff as a plot point. Not to mention that if TV and movies are to be believed, everyone uses a Mac. My wife hates it when I point this stuff out when we are watching a show.

Re: Pretend Youre On NCIS
That one's almost plausible. About two years ago someone (at Columbia?) found out that HP LaserJets could be owned by sending one a (properly constructed) document to print. That is: you could encode a complete firmware in a document, send that document to be printed, and the printer would install your firmware.
This link sorta sucks:
Tens of millions of HP LaserJet printers vulnerable to remote hacking | ExtremeTech
... but it's the first one that popped up in a search. The 'fiction' is so close that it wouldn't surprise me to find that this episode was very much ripped-from-the-headlines.
