Defcon 21 Las Vegas August 1st - August 4th Rio Convention Center
Yes, I know its early but I figured I would plant the seed and see if anyone is planning on attending this year? They just announced block rooms are available at the Rio
https://www.defcon.org/index.html
rooms are around $100 a night through their deal. I found them as cheap as $90 a night booked directly through the total rewards Rio website.
Anyway, I am booked July 31st through August 5th. If you plan on attending and care to meet (or not) let me know here. It was a blast last year.

I don't know why everyone thinks that DefCon is just a hacking convention. There is SO much more to it. Its an IT security Conference that deals with defending your infrastructure against threats. My job pays my admission fee every year and in exchange I implement changes to defend our network against threats. I am not a hacker. I have a Masters of Science in Information management which is basically an MBA in IT. I deal with project management and information security on a daily basis. Some of the stuff that is revealed for the first time (zero day exploits) at DefCon are amazing and well worth the admission price. Now, with that said, I leave my laptop at home/work and I disconnect my smartphone from my work network while I am attending the convention. I am not an idiot. At the same time I don't want everyone to think that the only reason people go to DefCon is that they are a hacker.

Oh and I forgot to mention in my original post...there is also copious amounts of alcohol, fantastic Las Vegas food options, topless girls at hacker jeopardy and crazy after hours parties. Just saying.....
Oh, and there are no open container laws in Vegas. That means you can drink from a flask all day long, even walking down the Las Vegas Strip.
You can even visit DefCon's lock-pick village and learn just how easy it is to get out of handcuffs. It surprised me. Difficulty of picking hand-cuffs while in them is directly proportional to the amount of the beverage consumed from the previously mentioned flask.Last edited by Phyrelight; 01-24-13 at 08:55 AM.

Well my degree is specifically in IT Security. Working on my BS and eventually my Masters. Only reason I have not been to one is that I live in FLA. There are many areas of security. Some offense, some defense. Some are physical. Like door locks and handcuffs. My end goal is to do contract Pen Testing (network, OS, and physical) and contract work (forensics, analyst, expert witness for court cases, etc.) for LE. I already work for LE so I have a good "in". I guess only time will tell.

Don't forget that Black Hat is immediately before Defcon July 27-Aug 1 at Caesar's Palace... Defcon is more 'commercial'... Black Hat typically has more interesting discussions.
