Re: Friends, lend me your eyes
So they actually closed the schools because of .......rain....and the fear of it freezing at 40F ?
I think I can speak for The Great State of Minnesota when I say, BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Even if the air temp dipped below freezing for a night, it wouldn't likely do much freezing. The pavement holds quite a bit of heat, so the air temp needs to get considerably below freezing in order to freeze any standing water on the pavement (assuming your ground isn't frozen already).
Up here in God's country, we are driving trucks on the lakes. Lot's of frozen water.

Dexie Poo. A few years ago my school in Louisiana got canceled for warnings of ice the day before the ice was supposed to hit. The next day was sunny and in the 70s.

K-12 I think I had 3, maybe 4 snow days. It has to get BAD for the suburban schools to close up here. Get out of town a ways, and they get delayed quite a bit, but don't completely close too often.
The school schedule was set-up the way it is because of agriculture. The summer growing/harvesting season took priority. There was more time for learnin' in the Fall and Winter months.
The idea of having year-round school schedules has been bandied around here for quite a while. Instead of one long break in the Summer, there would be three, one month breaks. The Teachers Union dislikes the idea.....to say the least.lol

If both parents work, or in a single parent home, school closings are a major problem. You either have to call in sick or find emergency last minute babysitting. If you are a small business owner, you could be really in a bind

Salt works better to melt the ice on the roads. Why kill the weekend stash on a Tuesday?
@ Gato and Idunn have ALL of us here when it comes to cold. North Dakota is where Minnesotans think it's too cold to live. Not a tree or a hill in the State (if a potato falls off of a truck, it can be seen for 20 miles in any direction), so the wind gets whipping, and the snow keeps moving. The whole state is a snowdrift for at least 2 months out of the year. Penguins won't even live there.
But they do have some kick-ass college hockey....
