Not all the details are in, but apparently the captain began backing down on the huge fish, a common practice in big-game fishing when a fish is taking line. He puts the boat in reverse to chase the fish...

If the story is true. then yeah it can be real. When he fell he probably jerked the wheel and caused the boat to tip over.

When you are backing up, quite a bit of water can come over the back and into the floor. If you are taking water on faster than it can drain, you will have problems. Seems he was doing it for some time and filled the hull up with water. It is more the captain sunk with boat with the fish attached more than anything else.

The fish taking it down sounds better.
