Re: Taxes
Wasn't able to finish my taxes by the 15th this year - still waiting on K-1's from Texas businesses. However, in filing my extensions I was forced to face my new tax situation in all it's glory.
Yes my property tax rate has dropped compared to Texas - however given the increased expense of purchasing a comparable home in OR - the net actual dollars out of pocket are about the same. The rate here is around 1.9% - really weird way they assess value up here, everything is pegged to a 1997 value - which makes zero sense to me as our home was actually constructed in 2009.
Having no sales tax is not a panacea - state income tax is 9%, add in the local taxes (i.e. $35 per person arts tax - don't get me started -nickel and diming me to death) and property taxes and my total tax burden has gone up about 12% - FML!!
Like I said - Portland is awesome - taxes not as bad as when I lived in NYC - but a helluva lot worse than when we were in Texas. And now like everywhere else they are talking about taxing the 'rich' at a higher rate - rich equals combined family income in excess of 250k - so yeah BOHICA.
Wrote my checks - and will bury my head and try to forget about it until I get the forms from Texas, then I get to live through it all again as I prepare my final returns. At least the sun is out today....
