Just finished a 16 hour day because a crew took out a sheet vinyl job and they're a vct crew. It started the end of last week by me showing up and them telling me that this stack of paper is for me. I start looking at it and its a fucking punch list over 100 pages long. Then i notice its just the 1st floor. I get to the job and they hand me another punch list just as fucking thick for the second floor. So now the only thing i can think is well at least it only has 2 floors.

Then i start walking the job to see just how picky these fuckers are being to come up with a punch list like that. I mean im now caring a 2 inch thick punch list and the largest i ever saw before was like 8 pages. After my 2 hour walk all i can think is they're lucky a floor guy didn't come up with this punch list because these guys are being pretty cool about how fucked up these floors are. They didn't even put in the list where these stupid shits heat welded the white vinyl with the brown weld rod.

I finally start to feel like im getting somewhere with this shit and they walk it again and give me another punch list. Now they're walking rooms that i completed the punch looking for more shit to put on there. I guess i should have started burning the vinyl while i was welding to make it match the rest of the place because now the list has gotten basic like room 2112 seams entire room.

I've been on this thing for a week trying to hammer out this punch and they just pushed reset today. I'll be god damned if im redoing 5 miles worth of seams in this place. The crew that did it got fired so im sure my pay is coming from their retainer and the last check they wont get until im done if they have anything left at that point. I have never seen such bad workmanship on a vinyl job in my entire career.

I have got to find a way off this thing before the owners walk it and come up with their punch list. I done got suckered onto this one but how do you say no to the president of the entire region when you know he's hurting on this one? Got to find a way out without causing a shit storm.

......the issue is that parents are and will continue to tell Johnny and Susie that getting a 4 year degree in basket weaving even if they rack up student loans is somehow better than mastering a skill or trade in either a craft or technical role.

We need more diversity.

I agree. I do think an education is important but most would be surprised to find out a skilled tradesmen can make more then most with a degree ever will.

When this downhill slide started I remember thinking good we can finally start weeding out some of the hacks. Now however its gone on to long and many of the ones with skill got out of it. Now i spend half my time fixing other peoples shit when in reality they should have never been offered the job much less accepted it. People have got to learn to say no. They wont fire you for admitting its outside your skill set but they damn sure will after you fuck up a couple hundred grand worth of vinyl.

I know at least 3 times a month they ask me if i want a ceramic job and i always say the same thing. If its solid color with no insets sure i'll go do it but if it has detail work im not the guy you should be asking. Of course I also use to say i dont do stretch ins because im not good at the seams and now they know i am good at them thanks to one of their salesmen walking in on one i was finishing. I just dont like stretch ins but they are good for filler work if i need it.
