    Music Fundamentals are forgotten..

Since when the Fuck did music become all about this goddam remastered miced up triggered bullshit? I posted a video on my buddies FB page of a Very well drummer (Meytal Cohen) some may kno, Who covered a song from one of his favorite bands. Instead of getting a oh thats cool she did a nice job, I get a plethora of negative comments. "She has no flair" "I dont like the sound of her bass drum" "Shes boring to watch" Man Fuck you unmusicianship fucks. She has no flair? Seriously? Since when was drumming ALL about stick flips tricks and jumping all around the kit like your having a goddam seizure a Cool thing? Since travis barker? Fuck that piece of shit, Worst musican ive ever seen in the history of the music industry. You dont like the sound of her bassdrum because its not triggered and remastered to a punchy metal sound. I say that exact statement to you and you tell me well its not american? Really? Drum kits being Trigger and remastered to that punchy metal sound that you hear coming out of slipknot wasnt around way back when drummers like Buddy Rich, Steve Gad, Dave Weckl and the lot were around you fucktard. Do some goddam research if your gonna play an instrument. Theres a reason why Certain companies still make drums 13ply and above, because thats the REAL American way of doing it. Any drum kit you buy today is so low on ply to make it lighter to lug around and FORCE you to buy mics to trigger the shit out of it so it sounds the way you want it to without learning the fundamentals of tuning it the way it should be. Finally. Shes boring to watch? Because she sits there and plays every single song to the T without batting an Eye? Because she smiles the Whole fucking time while shes playing? We give her credit just because she has a set of tits? How about she gets credit because shes a fucking good ass drummer. Fuck outta here. I really hate having musical debates with lesser musicans then myself, And im not even that great of a musican, but at least i did all my research and backgrounds before i went off saying stupid shit just because i dont like the way another drummers playstyle is.

    /endrant

TLDR Like most of you prolly will do, Im mad because people need to do research on the instruments they play and a little history of music so they know where all the cool things they can do now a days originated from. I hate to say this, but i seriously feel like im getting old now.

hahahaha, Whateverrrr!!! I just had to get this out to save myself the argument of telling a fellow musican he has No idea what the Fuck hes talking about. I put it to him in a nice way, Figured id let it out here.

PS. I forgot to mention, The ONLY Company that makes Low ply Drum kits that still sound amazing when tuned properly with the right heads is DW and their low price brand PDP (Which i currently own 2 kits) Both kits with original heads sounded like shit, Threw good heads on the Birch kit, sounded Awesome, Threw even better heads on the Maple kit i have and the thing cracks like thunder. Any other company, Pearl, Tama, Gretsch (no offense, i know some own Gretsch here) But they are Mainstream kits that need the mics to sound they way they want them to.

Hell you can have a drum head Laying on the drum, Mic it the fuck up and change it in the mixer so it sounds Amazing. If you dont believe me, Take a 13ply Truth kit Mic it up do a raw recording, then take a Tama starclassic Mic it up do a raw recording and i personally Guarantee the Truth sounds 10x better.

Look, Im still ranting even in my second post that wasnt supposed to be rant. Shesh, I never realized how much i actually care about my music....Or maybe im on my period...

As a guitarist, I deal with many musicians with egos. The bottom line is that tone is subjective. What I think sounds awful, others might think sounds great. Other people hear my setup and probably roll their eyes and call me "grandpa". I like real tube amps and analog effects pedals. Lots of guys use digital sound processors, such as the expensive Axe FX II, but it just isn't for me. I have better ways to blow a couple grand.

While the drummers you listed are great, they are primarily Jazz drummers, so their needs are going to be different than a rock drummer, blues drummer, metal drummer, etc. I know that on my kit, changing over to Evans G2 heads gave my kit a great rock sound, but I know it isn't for everyone.

The drummer in my current band currently plays on a custom piccolo snare because he likes the snappy Chad Sexton groove sound it gives. We don't run triggers off of anything. We just run a simple overhead mic and run the Beta 52 on the kick and 57s on the snare and toms. We don't play speed metal and do heavy double bass stuff, so triggers are not needed. The kick sounds great out of the PA.

Don't get annoyed other musicians, don't disrespect them, just don't listen to them. The way I see it, bad press is still press. If there is a musician I don't care for, I just keep my mouth shut. Music is art. Either your own, or a reproduction of someone else.

I know what you mean. I've been taking guitar theory/technique lessons from my teacher for about 8 years now. He is a jazz/twang player at heart, and I feel his pain when his metal students just want to learn how to crunch pentatonic and refuse to learn anything else. He absolutely blows my mind with modal mastery of the fret-board, and his jazz sweeps would put most metal players to shame.

It seems the more musical theory knowledge that a guitarist has, the greater appreciation for jazz/bluegrass/classical they will have since they understand its intricacies and the craftsmanship that is involved. Don't get me wrong, I love a good metal breakdown and a gnarley face melting solo as much as the next guy, but there's no substitute for musical theory.

I couldnt agree with both of you more, Thats why i came here to let out my frustration instead of to his face. I know i listed Jazz drummers, but honestly, Where do you think most musicians gathered their playstyles from? Rage against the Machine is Perfect example, classified as a Rock sound, Funk/rap/jazz playstyle. I personally hate the Punchy sound of bass drums, however i do understand that thats what metal is "supposed" to sound like. I dont have an Ego per say, but when it comes to theory and history of where things originated i get pretty defensive about it when people dont have the slightest idea what theyre saying or even talking about. Yes their needs are going to be different, but im not talking about their needs, Im talking more about how some musicans believe that punchy metal sounds is where all music originated from and thats what is needed to "fit in" in todays music industry, I say Fuck that shit and play your own way, your own style, with your own sound, Dont become another pawn to society, Dont copy off other drummers, The stick flips and tricks and speedy double bass has all been done before, Ive managed to fuse that Rage against the machine feel infused with classic rock into my harder rock music. I got asked by my band mates ALL the time to play like this drummer from this band, or that drummer, or do this because he does it. My response everytime and will always be, I am not that drummer, i will play my way and if you dont like it then im not the drummer for you.

    Re: Music Fundamentals are forgotten..

I don't write music and I haven't read music since high school. I know the basics of theory and enough to know how to drop a lead over many different chord progressions, but my real talent is with my ear. I am able to hear something and replicate it. Not just once or twice, but I memorize the melody in my mind, the timing, the stops, the changes, etc. If I hear a song once, I can typically replicate it.

This exact reason is why I have been able to fill in for MANY cover bands out there. I take tons of gigs where people just know me from word of mouth and they need a lead player or extra guitar player/singer for the night. They send me the list, and within a day or two I will have it all down to an acceptable level.

In the process, I run into a lot of guys that tend to want to argue with me, saying I am playing it "wrong". I ask them... "You told me to learn it like the record, so I did. You aren't playing it like the record." They argue, so we go listen to the song and 9 times out of 10 I am right. I don't mean to be a snob, but if you want to play some other arrangement, write it down for me and I will do that instead.

But I do feel your pain, Stealthy. I have a few close friends that I consider "tone deaf". One of them insists that a more powerful amp is always the better solution. I run my 22w Deluxe Reverb or at most my 45w Super Reverb, but I mic them through a PA. Levels are relatively low so the signal stays clean, and I use my stomp boxes to get my overdrive sound. This guy comes over with 100w Marshall cranked to 11 with the highest gain overdrive, no mic to it, and we are constantly battling with levels. Guess what? I am running through 3000w of PA. He won't win. For some reason he just thinks louder is better. It's not.

His question is always "how can I get my rig to sound like that?" Well, you sell the Marshall, that's how.

The 'louder is better' mentality is only reinforced by the industry engineers who master recordings to CD. They crank everything, to the point that it starts clipping and sounds like muddy bullshit. Bands see people complaining about their album sounding like shit... and they get defensive because what they approved was the final mix BEFORE it was sent to mastering. Rush's Vapor Trails album is a perfect example of this.
