Post Looking for a database/programming job willing to relocate

Hey all, most of you probably don't know me, but if you ask about I am sure someone has some good things to say.
Take a moment and I'll give you a quick history before my question.....

I went to school for software engineering.

I have held one job/co-op/internship as a data center telecommunications specialist (mapped physical and virtual connections of two datacenters).

Another I had as a software developer for a very large database driven application for doctors in hospitals (I wrote the back-end support tools to fix issues, lots of database interaction, Oracle-java, ant based compile scripts and Junit testing suite).

Currently I have been working in the power generation industry (specifically hydro-electric). I have been maintaining and creating access databases for a few ongoing projects. I have been picking up a LOT of electrical and mechanical engineering know how to the point where I am out traveling and testing wiring/control cabinets all the time.

I want to put my feelers out there to see if anyone would be interested in a software developer with an emphasis on database, back-end, or high performance programming experience. I will admit because of my current job I am a little rusty as programming (aside from simple SQL queries) is not part of my job. I do however pickup just about anything very quickly as evidence to the fact that I am now functioning as more of an electrical engineer than anything (never had a class for this stuff ever)....

So if anyone has an opportunity let me know, I am willing to move across the country. And I am not super desperate either, just wanted to know if there were opportunities I am passing up. Would love to get away from my current 6weeks traveling 1week back work schedule, as well as not being something I love to do.

Plus, working with one of the awesome people I have met here and then kicking their butt, or getting destroyed by them later that evening would be awesome

Re: Looking for a database/programming job willing to relocate

I go to Northern Arizona University here in Flagstaff Arizona and there's quite a few openings now actually.

3 data warehouse positions (2 back-end, 1 front-end), a Database Admin Intermediate/Senior Position, several team lead positions, a few applications dev positions, some web-dev positions in a few different departments, a security senior position, and a slew of others with programming emphasis. Most of these positions would require fairly extensive web programming experience with competent knowledge of the .NET framework and experience with Oracle systems; more or less depending on which position you were looking at. The DBA position would most likely require knowledge of both SQL and Oracle systems as well as scripting experience with automation applications. The security position would require pretty mad skills, as it's my good friend's old job and he left some pretty big shoes. He is giving a talk at DefCon and his team has won their CTF contest several times.

The applications positions mostly will be using Java/C# and probably some server-side stuff as well. I have a bunch of friends in different departments across campus and most of them have pretty C#-intensive projects. If you're good with Java than the similarities with C# are close enough that you should be able to swing in quickly.

There are also some really top-notch EE/ME positions in my city as well at W.L Gore and Associates medical division where I work now. We are a fortune 100 company and Forbes named us 12th best place to work a few years back. Tons of R&D, manufacturing, automation, process engineering, QA/QC, you name it. It's pretty tough to get your foot in the door here if you don't know people, but not impossible if you are what they are looking for.

There's also some good jobs in Phoenix and Tucson as well. Reytheon, General Dynamics: C4 Systems, Garmin, and Intel all have a strong presence here and are constantly hiring EE/CS/MEs in droves. Most would probably have you doing lower level software engineering, closer to the hardware, in the domain of GPS, Radio, or Radar. I think Reytheon is the only one where you could potentially be working on weapons. My friends at those companies do a lot of embedded development, PCB design, and stuff like that.

The Palo Verde Nuclear plant outside of Phoenix also is a good place to work from what I hear from my friends that have interned there. They will take most technical backgrounds, since they have their own training courses they give if you get a job there.

If you want to surround yourself in an environment and really plug-in with the tech community; it'd be pretty had to beat the Bay area and the Seattle area for software dev jobs.

Re: Looking for a database/programming job willing to relocate

Oh, and in-case my pitch for Flagstaff wasn't convincing enough...

60,000 people in our lovely university city at the base of the San Fransisco peaks. We are at 7000 feet elevation and we have all 4 seasons here. A short drive in any direction can land you in any climate you want! 30 minutes from Flag and you will be in the great Sedona red-rocks. 2 hours south and you'll be nice and toasty in Phoenix.

    just outside the city limits.

I work for ASU and I can say (like UofA and NAU) the state benefits are awesome.

I didn't know you were at ASU phyrelight, that's awesome. My cousin recently finished the CS program there. How do you like working down there?

How much are you looking for? There is/was a position here in Gainesville (University of Florida but for the local municipality GRU) for Database/Storage and another one for Programming. Both were around 60k with full benefits.
