Re: Pacific Rim
It is FAR from a fresh idea. It's FAR from good. I expect FAR more from Guillermo Del Toro.
I will attempt to not includ spoilers but... Fair warning if you read something you don't want to read.
The movie is so filled with tropes that there's absolutely nothing original about it.
It can't decide if it wants to be a comedy or serious. You get these cool action scenes and serious but BAD acting... And suddenly you get bombarded by ridiculous stereotype scientists that are so clearly NOT serious... along with Ron Perlman's character who's also comical.
The movie is 90% Top Gun... I mean seriously. And top gun has been redone so much that it, itself is a trope. Bad boy pilot goes against the rules when it suits him because he's just that good. Goose dies because of this. He loses the will to be a pilot and goes to build a big wall. Military makes a play to get him back because... he's just that good. First time back he fails miserably because flashbacks to losing Goose. Iceman is like "wtf noobz!? He's not gonna be MY wingman!!" Next shot he makes good and Iceman is like "You can play gay volleyball with me any time!" "Nonsense! You can play gay volleyball with ME!" Gayness ensues. Throw in a new final act that is... not bad, but filled with some pretty stupid understanding of physics. Toss in some Galactica, Evangelion, ID4...
And all of that just barely touches the number of cliches that fill this movie. And every single one of them happen in exactly the order and in exactly the place that you would expect. A monkey could have written this movie. Del Toro needs to be ashamed. The only single thing that gives it ANY amount of value is the CGI which is reasonably good and gives a pretty good sense of scale when they aren't fighting in the water. Once in the water there's not much to keep the sense of scale, but that's forgivable.
Worth renting but I have a sad feeling that I'll enjoy Sharknado which I plan to watch sometime today when I gather enough bad movie energy to do so.
I give the movie a 4.5/10.

Re: Pacific Rim
Yup... watching Sharknado right now and it's a better movie. Because it's a bad movie; it knows it; and it doesn't put on pretenses of being anything BUT a bad movie.
That... and sharks... in a tornado... IT'S A SHARKNADO!!!

Re: Pacific Rim
Fun movie was fun.
I mean really... It's about mechs vs giant monsters don't expect Citizen Kane levels of characterization. Not saying that they couldn't have done it better but I enjoyed the movie for what it was, a mass appealing action movie with a strong dose of sci fi and style, with a fair amount a character and world building to hold it together. Would highly recommend if you want to see a good old fashion non cynical summer movie.
