The "Sweet Jane" I posted in the first of what are now three Lou-is-Dead threads is from that. Antony Hegarty does a great job with "Candy Says".

I would like to say that the so called critics that panned this album should be skinned alive, I think it was his crowning achievement.

I agree, but I'm cutting the critics a break. Rather than skinned alive I'm just going to call them vapid and gutless.

Seems like it was hard to keep up with Lou Reed. From what I understand, the subject matter of Berlin was pretty far ahead of the times for pop music. It's difficult material. Drugs, spousal abuse, suicide, social services taking the kids away, prostitution - a hard slice of reality is pretty fucking real, but that doesn't make it any less hard.

Shit, we're 2500 years out and Oedipus Rex is a tough sell to pop audiences. "I fucked your mom" is a joke between bros, but there ain't no room for the tragedy of "I fucked my OWN mom" in today's world.

When did Berlin come out?... 1973?

Amy Winehouse gets commercial success and critical cunnilingus for "Rehab" in 2006 - like you gotta have big tits and a big nose to get any attention from the respect mongers.
