(Blondy's Movie Lounge: Part 1) The Counselor-----Umm that was fucked up

When I first saw this trailer I couldn't wait to see the movie. For the most part I have enjoyed most of Ridley Scott's movies: Alien, Blade Runner, G.I. Jane, Gladiator, Hannibal, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, American Gangster, Robin Hood, and Prometheus. Pretty solid list of movies if you think about it. There are many more, but these are my personal favorite and while I can say some of them aren't Oscar worthy, they all provided good entertainment.

When it comes to "The Counselor" I think that is pretty much all I can say about it, "good entertainment". The movie was written by Cormac McCarthy. He also wrote No Country for Old Men. If you've seen that movie you will know there is a lot of long dialogue. I used to get lost in long dialogue when I was younger, but now I've learned to really soak in the meaning of what these characters are saying. Almost all of it is symbolism of some kind and by the end of the movie you realize why that character said what he/she said. If you don't like long dialogue, "Tarantino-type dialogue", then you might want to stay away from this movie.

If you don't like dark, gritty, gruesome movies then you also might want to stay away from this flick. I have a strong stomach for movie violence. I can watch almost any kind of gory horror movie, but what really gets me is the realistic movie gore. The kind of shit that you can actually see happening in real life. There weren't a lot of 'action' moments in this movie, but when they do occur you'll be cringing. As much as I hate those moments, I love them.

As far as acting I think everyone did a great job. You really can't go wrong with a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt. The Cheetah infatuation was an interesting touch for Diaz's character. Pretty sexy imo. Oh and if you've read any other reviews of this movie you'll have heard about the outrageous 'sex' scene. Lmao, it is indeed outrageous and will for sure make you chuckle.

Overall I was in shock when the credits started rolling. "Ummm that was fucked up" was exactly what I thought to myself. Don't expect any happy endings or some final revelation by the end of the movie. In simple terms I would explain this movie as a "realistic truth". Maybe Brad Pitts moment was a bit unrealistic, but everything else I can believe happens in the real world...to people who become greedy, live risky, and desire more than they need. Now that I think about it, it has a very similar story to "No Country for Old Men". This is definitely the type of movie that your reaction changes when you watch it again and really begin to understand what the fuck actually happened. Maybe it will be more simple then I thought or maybe more complex, I don't know. Like I said there was a lot of dialogue. Looking forward to watching it again on BluRay.

You listed Gladiator after GI Jane? Who does that? lol

I didn't realize it was written by the "no country for old men" writer, or I'd have been less excited. I really only wanted to see it cause of Micheal Fassbender. I've said it before and I'll say it again, he's the Daniel Day-lewis of this generation. He's a phenomenal actor. Both Shame and Hunger(maybe It's more of a Steve McQueen thing I have haha) were awesome. Granted, once I saw Cameron Diaz I figured it would suck, she's kind of a kiss of death. Thanks for the review, I'll wait for HBO.

Listed by date, "G.I. Jane"(1997) was made before "Gladiator"(2000).

In terms of Fassbender, it really wasn't a phenomenal performance. Not because he's acting sucked, but because it was a one-dimensional character in my opinion. I guess you can say he did a great job being an educated, greedy, and suave businessman though I know many who can pull off that character if you know what I mean. I definitely agree he does have the ability to pull off Day-Lewis type performances.

    And Diaz...well I'm a sucker for blondes.

lol Well the blondes thing is ok then haha.

I'm pretty weird about Scotts movies. I'm one of the few who really disliked Blade Runner. And people give me shit about that and so be it, it wasn't as good as everyone says it is. I didn't like it. I think this movie suffers from the writer. Again though, I'm one of the few who really disliked "no country". And I didn't like it cause I thought the script sucked. Javier Bardem I'd say is another great actor, but he's limited by the script. Look at the last Bond movie, the movie itself was Meh, but he played the perfect Bond villain. I was so excited about Skyfall, but the way he's character was written(and his plan) ruined it.

Yea I agree to a point. After reading many reviews of The Counselor a lot of critics bashed McCarthy's script for the movie. And I can agree with them when really dissecting the movie, but I can also enjoy the movie for what it is. I enjoy critiquing movies, but I dislike when critics act so snotty about movies sometimes. As stated in the OP, the movie was good entertainment. I didn't leave the movie pissed that I spent $10.
