Turn old beer bottles into glass cups

I came across this gem on Facebook. I really want to try it, and was wondering if anybody here has done it, and if it really works.

Check it out, its pretty fucking sweet

I did something similar when I needed to cut thick plexy glass and was to lazy to go out and by a specific hack saw for it.

Dunno about glass the theory is sound but it's all about the execution. Expect glass to break unexpectedly, if you do this over a sink (I'd use a bucket) plug the damn drain! Las thing you want is to fish out broken glass from your plumbing!!

Also important there's a line or... Seam (there's a term for it but I forget) on glass cups that surrounds the rim to strengthen the cup, the resulting Cup from the beer bottle will not have it, so expect them to break easy with any shearing or compressing force.

Also... Sand those rims DAMN good... Don't want any glass chips in the lips

Tried it out earlier this evening on a Mountain Dew and a couple Bawls bottles I had lying around.

    Attachment 11862

Worked pretty well on the Mountain Dew bottle, though a small bit on the front cracked lower that I wanted and made it look less even.

    Attachment 11863

Close up of the break after using a dremel and sandpaper

The Bawls bottles were tough as balls! 2 of them didn't even break (tried 2-3 times each) and one of them broke but the cuts were horrendous. Bawls bottles are just too thick of glass for this method from what I tried. I used very thin cotton string and a very thick cotton shoelace. The thicker the string, the worse the cut.

If I wanted to make some nicer ones I'm probably going to get a glass cutter or something to get some nice clean cuts. I like the looks of these as cups, but this method isn't quite as reliable for making usable/drinkable glasses
