    I'm having a baby!

    Re: I'm having a baby!

Grats! I think the doctor is the most important choice. In my case everything worked out great in the end, but we had some tough Make Right Now decisions and if we didnt trust our docs advice/reasons it could have ended very very badly. So I guess talk to the doc further with the What If kinda stuff. If your lady has a family history of easy or hard deliveries that might affect ya'lls decision with which route to go.

I just don't like "on call hospital docs" too much. My brother-in-law and his wife are both doctors. They've both performed many deliveries. They would both call my wife stupid for not going to the hospital. Thing is, birth centers are usually within blocks of a major hospital, in our case, both birth centers we are looking at are right across the street from the Baylor Medical Center. My wife has her female doctor, which she likes, but usually the doctor you want delivering doesn't deliver because they are unavailable when you go into labor. So, when you show up at the hospital, it's usually the on-call doc that performs the delivery. Baby deliveries is big business in the medical industry. Did you know doctors don't like to wait till the baby is ready to be born, ie, they induce labor. They also like to perform c-sections. They even like to get everything done in time to go home at 5 pm. My wife and I both just got back from a visit with her brother and his wife. While there, I noticed how much antibiotics and other pills they have lying around their house. They are 30, they shouldn't be taking anything at their age. MD's prefer to solve everything with a pill rather than prescribe some good ol life changes like a better diet or some exercise.

Jmw, I don't know who you are talking to but I have four boys, my wife was never induced, the second was born minutes after arriving at the hospital, and my wife has never had a c-section. The most difficult delivery was the first because 1 it was the first and 2 my wife opted early on for an epidural that slowed dilation and all but stopped labor. If you do not trust your doctor (s) find another ASAP. I was present for all the deliveries and present for every procedure. I also was there to cut the cord. As I said before, all 4 births were in the hospital.

I'm not telling you that the hospital is the way to go ... I can only tell you about our experiences.

Congrats JW. You should hope for the 13th. All the cool people are born on the 13th.

    Congrats!

If you guys are looking for a more natural birth (which is what my wife and I wanted) then you'll have to go a midwife. It's a better environment than the hospital by far.

From the research my wife and I did we realized that the gestation and birth were key to our daughters development. One example I can remember off the top of my head is what the call "skin to skin" time which is the practice of putting the baby directly on the mommy's chest once the baby is born for AT LEAST 30min but an hour or longer is best. Babies can't regulate the temperature for the first few months of their lives so by putting the baby on the mommy it allows the baby's temperature to be regulated by the mom's and it keeps them from getting too hot/cold. Another cool thing about skin to skin is that there are very special and specific hormones that are released within the babies first tears when they cry which strengthens the emotional bond to the baby from the mom (and even dad if he's close to mommy and baby right after the birth!). But the mom has to be right next to the baby for the tears to have their effect.

We unfortunately were part of the minority and had to go to the hospital due to complications (our amazing midwife caught the signs of preeclampsia before it was severe so we went to the hospital about a week before our daughter was due and didn't need transport). And for us, wanting and planning on a natural birth, being thrown into the hospital scene was a nightmare. We luckily had put together a birth plan so it gave us a great plan of action but despite giving it to the hospital staff I constantly had to battle with them to keep as close to our plan as possible. The birth was high risk so concessions had to be made but there was a lot of unnecessary confrontation (For the enquiring minds I'm an ex-first responder so I know my shit).

Again, none of this was a problem we experienced in the hospital.

If you don't like hospitals and simply dislike medicine then just say so ... especially when you don't have the experience to say otherwise. Natural birth ... there is nothing unnatural about going to the hospital ... nothing.
