Well, your video card may be powerful enough, but your CPU is significantly below the minimum specs. That may be the problem.

You can try :

Uninstalling and reinstalling your video drivers.

Delete your VIDEO.TXT file in your left4dead\cfg folder and let it recreate itself.

The minimum specs for L4D 1 and 2 is a 3ghz single CPU, or a 2ghz dual core. Even though you may be able to play other games successfully, Left 4 Dead is a resource hog and requires a lot of horsepower.

I would not be surprised that you get pretty good FPS if the game is not properly rendering the graphics, black and white should be pretty easy to display.

If you can upgrade your CPU, I would try that.

Well, if you could play 1 ok, but not 2, then there might be something hosed up with the game. Have you reinstalled the game, or done a Verify Integrity via Steam yet?
