    I suspect that that decision was made with an eye on the future. van Gaal is no spring chicken. Get Giggsy in to get experience and promote him to manager when van Gaal retires or is fired.

    Plus Giggs knows the players better than van Gaal, having personally played with them. I'm sure he'd be able to identify their skills and weaknesses more precisely since he's fresh off the pitch

    That's the thing, add to it he is supposedly well liked by the players. If Giggs isn't 100% on board with everything van Gaal does, I think it could (easily) see the players siding with Giggs over the manager (especially with the manager being known as a bit of a hard ass).
