Oh, absolutely. You and I are same-pagers.

It's all about the contrast. Nothing makes screwing up language more effective than having already shown you can knock the ball of correctness out of the park.

It took me a long time to learn how to recognize appropriate social context. Shit, it's still not 100% (or maybe even 80%).

I'm with the Lover on this one. Language is a dynamic living entity that is constantly in flux. The English language that is being sinned against by these "kids" is actually a really ugly slang comprised mostly of Anglish/French/Latin and was developed primarily by the Anglish servants of the French nobility who took over England after the battle of Hastings in 1066. You're essentially speaking a 1000 year old version of Spanglish. So being critical of people for not speaking English correctly is like giving someone shit for not speaking Spanglish correctly.
All language is changing. Constantly. Technology affects language in huge ways and I feel pretty comfortable saying that the internet is affecting and will have an equal or greater effect on language than the printing press.
You can let it stress you out if you want or enjoy the show as our bastardized language continues to grow and evolve into something new and different.

More same-paging. I'm starting to love this thread.

English is unusual (unique?) in the number of sources. There's also a whole variety of Germanic and Scandinavian influences (I guess that's what the English got in exchange for the Danegeld).

It's a bitch that the language can't be nailed down. That's especially true for those of us who strive so hard for exactness and precision in communication.

But eventually I got over it. The mailable, adaptable, and evolving nature of English is perfect for a world that's changing. It's also great for humour. I'm pretty sure that any successful effort to nail down syntax and usage would (in the long term) be a death sentence for the language.

That's not to say I don't have some serious peeves about some of it. Some things strike me as horribly affected (lately that's people who use 'whilst' and its siblings).

    Cheers,

    I'm loving this thread, too.

Language is like music. There are some basic rules that most follow, but the first rule is there are no rules. If you can make a word up, and enough people use it, it becomes "official". Words like "selfie" didn't exist even 5 years ago, but are commonplace today.

I'd expand on my thoughts, but I have to role.

Boomus' peeve is "The Feels". Not having them, just expressing it that way.

Mine (one of dozens hundreds (I should probably get some therapy a beer)) is "whilst" (though, oddly, I give a pass to beknownst).

But I have a language question for anyone who will answer:

When you hear "schooner of beer", what does that bring to mind?
