Thread: Games and Socio-network Dynamics

Yeah, pretentious thread title. Couldn't think of a better one.

I watched this a while ago:




... while I was away and so didn't post it then. I thought someone would post it, but as far as I can see no one has. I thought it was a really good analysis of how social interactions and structures get distorted on a network. It's relevant to anyone who likes games, to anyone who develops software, and to anyone who spends at least some of their social time on the 'net.

Anyone here fit that description?

I saw this after seeing Notch's blog post about leaving Mojang. It's quite interesting.

I'd heard about Phil Fish in passing in my Media and Politics course, but I was never told much of the story.

My take-away from the video is that the internet is like the Wild Wild West. There is no rule except mob rule. Order on the internet is kept tenuously at best, and the moment someone makes a splash, all hell breaks loose. Whether the person who made the splash is lynched or praised depends on the whims of the mob; there are plenty of people who were praised, but some who were lynched, like Phil Fish.
