Just going to GUESS here... but...
Guessing the "brakes" you felt was probably the captain lowering landing gear to try to blow out the "fire". When the alarm was still sounding he put it into a dive to try the same. When neither worked they suspected a malfunction but the smart choice was to land immediately.
What flight number was it and what date?

one thing I learned that seemed interesting to me, I always wondered about the "Air Marshall" and if they were in SOME random flights. I guess they really are there, and even more interesting he was the planes mechanic, now it makes sense that a man goes paired with the plane, someone who can be more useful than just slapping handcuffs on an asshole or braking a fight mid air u know?
