Re: Finally
There were very few rejects. It's more a case of having had the concept of Tumblr rolling around in my head for a while and me looking for a description of appropriate pith.
It's a weird sort of sharing they encourage. In general, it feels like very little is really created there. Someone sees something interesting out in the Wild Wild Web and then 'blogs' it by pasting it into their Tumblr after first cutting the link to the original.
Now it's inside the garden's wall and enters 'sharing' mode where anyone who sees it and likes it then re-blogs it (sorry, re-'blogs' it) into their own Tumblr.
The process creates an endless parade of little whorl-eddies that are basically insta-formed cool-kid cliques. One thing it doesn't create is any traffic or credit for the original artist/author.
There are lots of post-web-two-dot-oh sites that are very similar, and honestly I don't think they're necessarily bad. I think the process they encourage is self-serving and fatuous, but some people find it entertaining and fun and that isn't a bad thing. I find some of them entertaining and fun as well. Some of them are maintained by people who are honestly trying to curate a particular experience for their followers.
I'd been playing around with 'Gazing' and variations on "How deep does this navel go?", but none of them worked and the reason is that 'deep' is wrong. It isn't deep. None of it goes deep. Some of it looks deep because it's been
re-blogged from
someone who re-blogged it
from someone who re-blogged it
from someone who re-blogged it
from someone who re-blogged it
from someone who pasted it into their Tumblr and didn't make a link to the original
There's nothing deep about a circle-jerk either. Everyone's jerkin' the next one over because if they all stick to the script it wraps around and there's a jerker for every jerkee. Again, there's nothing necessarily wrong with that, and I suppose if that's what you like then it's fun for everyone involved.
Shit, there are times when that's been a reasonable description for what goes on in these forums too.
Anyway, the only variations on that theme were:
Tumblr is the Circliest of Jerkles.
Tumblr: the Circliest of Jerkls.
... where leaving out the 'e' was a way to mockingly mirror the lost 'e' from Tumblr and try to evoke "Dr. Jekyll" in the mind of the reader. Maybe I should have tried 'Jerkyls' too, but at first glance it didn't scan well.
There's no way I'm posting it into Tumblr. Maybe I'll put it up elsewhere and hope that it gets captured by Tumblr - which would be a small measure of justice.
