It'd be amazing if Saving Private Ryan was based off a true story.

    Re: Favourite war-movie(s)

Saving Private Ryan wasn't entirely fictional at all. Just think of it as a bunch of true war stories thrown together to make one fictional one.

Saving Private Ryan is based on a compilation of real life rescues during WWII of surviving sons, including Patton's nephew. The basis of where they went is based on the rescue at Hommelburg by 3rd Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, with a fictional Ryan son being the last surviving son, but it was not the only time or occassion that a raid was based on saving the last heir. The rule still exists today.
It's also based on the Sullivan brothers.

    Re: Favourite war-movie(s)

Saving Private Ryan was fairly realistic as far as war movies go. Sure, it had its inaccuracies (the tactics throughout, the T34 Chassis for the "Tiger", fighting that division of the SS, etc.), but overall, it was a fairly real taste of WW2.

More than about 90% of the war movies out there. Which doesn't say much.

Cant get more accurate than "To Hell and Back" with Audie Murphy. He played himself in the role that allowed him to receive the CMH

That movie was really great, but the only thing that really killed it to me was the cheesy affects. I guess I can't complain though since it was made in what like the 1810's...
