Servers Need to Be Addressed Immediately
Let me start off by saying I love Left 4 Dead. Been waiting for this type of game for years. The gameplay is great, graphics are fantastic. Have recommended to everyone I know. The game just has one "HUGE" issue...
Finding Servers
Problem A: Lets say you want to create a expert campaign game lobby. You create one, people join, the game begins. L4D searches for a dedicated server. 75% of the time you are put on the difficulty which you did not specifiy...
Meaning everyone has to exit out & you have to do the whole process, over & over & over again until it finds a server with the expert difficulty.
Now...yes I am aware you can change the difficulty at any time by calling a vote. However If you are trying to go for an achievement, such as "What are you Trying to Prove" it prevents you from doing so.
Problem B: This specific incident has happened 6 times over the past week. I join a server. Get to the finale, nearly complete a acheivement and 1 of 2 things will happen. 1) The host will shut down the server. 2) The host will pull some other form of BS such as activating cheats etc, preventing all people present in the game from getting any acheivement they were working towards.
Solution: Valve needs to isolate custom servers that prevent players from obtaining achievements. There needs to be an option to exclude servers which are not "Pure".
Hopefully this thread will be percieved more constructively than a rant, but the fact of the matter is I would have almost every acheivement in the game minus the 53,000+ kills at this point if it were not for running into BS on every server I join.

Well, best of luck
I'd recommend joining our Steam Group (link in mine or Alan's signature). We have 3 servers, where 1 of them is supposed to run no-cheats co-op mode all the time, and the two others are at least supposed to run Versus all the time >_>__________________________________________________

I completely agree. Finding a good server is kind of complicated, even with the use of the openserverbrowser command.
Most of them are too laggy (may have to do with my internet connection, but I mean some are extremely laggy). Some of them just shut down in the middle of the game.
The ingame server search is just stupid. It finds a server, the game starts loading and then I'm kicked back to the main menu, because the server is full.
Finding a server is the only part I hate about this game.
You can't. That's why it's called random.

In addition, it's hard to get a game going.
Whereas in TF2, DOD:S, <Insert Shooter Here>, you can get a few people together and fool around until it starts filling up, in L4D, 1-3 people cant do much to get an L4D server going. Not only are there chances limited that anyone will directly join at all, but most others will just opt for a fresh lobby. A shame really, but an issue that I can't really find a solution for.

Yep.
That's what the lobby is for - starting a game with enough players.
And that's what the quick match is for - filling up games that are already going but need more players.
I guess those solutions that valve came up with do what they need to do, but with some quirks (mostly with searching for a game)...

lol, I once had a ridiculous error message from clicking on the quick match...
It gave me some totally generic error message like "Quick match failed" or something. I have no idea what happened - my internet was cut, aliens invaded earth or maybe the undead trying to contact me.
<3 Steam errors.
