RE: Internet Connection Speed
sbc dircetTV combines DSL service into one pacakge.
the real deal with your connection is to get the most upload and download speed.
you can pay $14.95 a month right now for a 128kb up, and a 1.5Mb down......but that 128 up is going to suck ass, and 1.5 down really isn't that fast. Means your downloads tap out at about 180-200KB/sec.
Or....you could may 24.95 a month, and get 512 up and 3.0Mb down....which is better, and closer to cable speeds.
the real issue is latency. traditionally, DSL's have shorter latencies on the average, since the DSL signal can only be carried a short distance from the companies router...something like 2 miles, literally.
Cable can go for miles and miles, and service thousands of people on the same shared pipeline.
cable is more avaialble in most places, but I'd stay on DSL.

RE: Internet Connection Speed
I would stay away from satellite. It is very expensive and not as stable as the other two. I have never had it, but I deal with people on a daily basis that do and they complain about it all the time. I know there can be some lag and if the weather is bad, it can affect your signal.

RE: Internet Connection Speed
I work for Time Warner Cable here in Houston and comparing my company's standard svc of 5mbps down and 384kbps compared to AT&T DSL of 1.5mbps down & 128kbps. Obviously there is big difference and normally they will try to up sell you to there 3.0mbps / 384kbps pro service. A couple things you have to consider with dsl. How close to live to the phone company? The closer you live the closer you get to the max connection speed. What special phone plan are you required to have to get the promotional price on dsl package? Here in Houston its around $50 SBC/AT&T Total Connections plan is what they call it. Plus there is equipment to buy and shipping & handling charges and in some cases an activation fee plus DSL goes through the phone line which mean it has its own seperate telecommunications taxes similiar to your phone line. Also many companies including my own are upgrading the speed of there standard service. For example I heard my division is going to upgrade standard roadrunner service to 7.0mbps down and 512kbps up. Currently I get the premium service for free which 8.0mbps down and 512kbps up. Which I heard is probably getting boosted 10mbps for free which I am getting around 9.5 mbps max downloading speed now. Personally I would stick with Cable. I have had both and I like Cable. I mean the only reason people are still getting dsl is because of eye candy promotional price, but then a year later there right back with the cable company. In the past few years cable modem has gotten faster without any price increase. DSL has remained the same speed and has only gotten cheaper because they cant boost the speed. Why you think AT&T and Verizon are investing 2-4 BILLIONS DOLLARS into there new fiber technology called FIOS. Which mean all the folks has dsl in couple years will have to get equipment because DSL are we know it is gonna get scrapped. But that is my two cents. Talk to you later.

RE: Internet Connection Speed
you couldn't game on a satellite based broad band connection. Your ping would be 200ms all the time. Bandwidth won't help you, if you're completely lagged out.
I hate my satellite service, and I'm going digital cable as soon as I'm out of my current apartment.

RE: Internet Connection Speed
Cable all the way.......
I get 6m down and god knows what on up... Can't even come close to that with DSL... I even think DSL here is affected by attenuation as I'm a ways away from the server location.....
Cable here rocks as I can combine with my cell and tv.... makes keeping track of bills easier! PLus cable tv has the "on demnad" feature you can't get on satellite, meaning without a pVR I can choose to watch movies and many HBO series like sopranos "on demand" when I have time.... SWEET......
Good luck with the decision dude

Looking to make a survivor group!
Looking to make. Not join.
Now, for details. I don't RP on voice-chat games, but I don't powergame either. And this is how it will be. I may RP, if I find worthy people, but I doubt it. Now, this "clan" will be composed of smart, non-abusive players. If I hear of glitching, I will destroy you. And your pets. :zombie05:
My group will be people who want to have fun, and have good ideas that you would be willing to send to Valve. No, I don't expect you to. But I hate people who say "I want a good DLC for the XBox version, but I don't wanna waste the time when Valve wouldn't do it if I asked". They will. It's not uncommon. Now, any questions, ask.
