You get kicked for anything, it's ridiculous even having the kick button (and friendly fire). Most games don't, such as Call of Duty 4, and they run a lot smoother and no one bothering you.

This happened to me alot on Gears of War, getting kicked for maybe grabbing a gun first or doing serious work. Also I got banned on Counter Strike: Source for apparently "hacking" because I was like 30 and 5 on a SurfRPG map.

Games like COD4 don't need the vote kick button because it is for the most part every man for himself and there is no TK'ing unless you play hardcore. Left 4 Dead on the other hand, is much different. If one person is running ahead or playing bad, the whole team suffers.

Example for COD4: Crap, someone took my kill, now MY score goes down.

Example for L4D: Crap, someone is running ahead by himself, and died. Now my TEAM is way less likely to survive.

I got kicked for becoming the tank once. Sucked so much.

You should stick with your team though.
