It may also have to do with player "intensity." Essentially, multiple things contribute to increasing a player's intensity: getting hit, fighting a Tank, fighting a mob, etc. If you have a high intensity as you approach the trigger for the director to decide where to send you, it could take your intensity into account and give you the easier route if it's too high.
Or it could just be random. :P

I'm now pretty sure it's not random. It depends on the A.I. Directors anger level.
The Directors Anger level is calculated based on a number of different factors, basically get to the door as fast as you can with as little damage as possible and you'll get the more difficult route.Life is meaningless. Signed T. Bear
