Re: ....when your commanding and......
I don't mind commanders spotting stuff but it can get annoying if the commander doesn't back it up with a few verbal commands as to which squad it pertains, or just spots everything even the stuff that none of his squads are near.

One of the best ways to waste time until the red dots go away from a scan, is to locate the best squad to use to eliminate whatever threat has reared its ugly head, start telling them about the new orders you are about to give them, issue the orders, then spot the enemies at the marker to reinforce why you are changing the squads orders.

even though it may get annoying, the commander believe it or not, can save your life. if you think your going to be safe capping the objective, and you dont see anyone near you, someone could pop up and kill you, then you would start complaining to the commander, "Why didnt you spot him?" i just dont really pay attention to them unless it affects me or my squad.

Re: ....when your commanding and......
In any BF game , the most important thing for COM is spotting well concealed snipers , their relative lonewolfness and lack of back up is a clue they are sniping, click on them to confirm the class , and even a non-recon kit might be a sniper of sorts like engineers with anti armor or surface to air missiles , spotting these guys is very important , not spotting every enemy you see , esp. if they are no where close to a friendly squad is acceptable , and saves you time and wasting audio spam that drowns out more critical noises like enemy lockon sounds and frantic calls for support. I support a vigilant commander 100 % , keeping a focus on your squads safety has to be priority one, since they trust us that much. :2

I like to just say something like "they seem to be massed at silo 5 and working their way to silo 2," instead of spotting to report troop movements. But there is nothing worse than a Commander that doesn't give you anything... the forums are full of advice for Commanders that seems to say communicate, communicate, communicate! I agree that you really cannot have too much, and everyone seems to appreciate your enthusiasm as much as I do. So, shut the fuck up and keep spotting... lol. I look forward to being under your command.
EDIT: OMG, is this the BF2 forum again? I am so confused...

The other thing it does is distract everyone, pretty much forcing them to look at their mini-map just to find out that nothing was spotted in their vicinity. This can cause some catastrophes quickly.
Judicious use of spotting is not easily attained, but you can rest assured that the front lines of a one flag engagement are confident that everything in front of them are enemies, so spotting for them may only help them about 20% of the time, while the rest of the time you just drowned out the sound of an enemy soldier asking for resupply or med packs, or giving the same. You need to find the most critical red dots and spot THEM, like; armor, choppers, warn about mines by telling your squad leaders where you put the mine symbols are where enemy mines are, think outside the box!
Remember, the worst aspect of this game that EA has their heads up their asses for, is that when you spot someone, EVERYONE on the battlefield hears it LOUDLY, regardless of whether the spotted enemy is 1 meter away from you or 1000 meters away.
