No idea - I bought L4D over Steam so everything was downloaded.
If you load in the CD and select Install from the CD autorun, it should install the L4D stuff to the computer (and do the Steam bit). This will leave only the recent patches/updates to L4D to download via Steam.
You shouldn't have to install L4D from Steam, there should be some kind of autorun when you insert the CD which has an install option thereon...

If you bought it on CD, then I would not be surprised if there were a lot of updates. If you fire up Steam and it shows that it is downloading, then I guess I would just let it run, overnight if necessary, and let it finish up.

Yes, buying it over a CD, especially now, will ages before you can finally play it (as well as re-downloading it over Steam to a new computer).
My suggestion is what Iggy suggests, do it over night or when you're out of the house. Just leave it running.
No, there is no way of bypassing this, so just hang in there. Might as well wait 10 hours then never playing it!
P.S. 120 kb/s is the average speed it will go as, don't expect to go pass 200 kb/s, and expect to have some crappy speeds from time to time.Originally Posted by David Lynch

And as I recall, the Crash Course update was quite large by itself, not to mention the numerous other updates that are probably not on the CD.
