No, not cheating. Subs and sounds both make the perfect asset you need to be good at the game. I use both.

According to Mincz, muddeprived is deaf so that's really the reason there in the game.

In L4D2 caption really dont help all that much,
for example you can hear a tank slightly before the captions for it go off, so if your listening you shouldn't need them, same goes for hunters ect, but those are harder to hear.

as for L4D1 they do i think go off before you can actually hear them in-game.

either way i wouldn't call it cheating, anyone can do it.

Everyone can use captions, so no it's not unfair. And contrary to what some people say, they don't take up half of your screen. Even people with perfect hearing can benefit from captions.

Tanks spawn idle most of the time, and don't attack until they see you. So "Tank Growls" can help you find out when there is a Tank. And no, you can't always hear him growling, so captions help there.

Another instance, you hear a Jockey but don't know where it is. You throw a pipe bomb behind a doorway and you see "Jockey pain" on the screen, it lets you know the Jockey is right there.

If you use cheatphones, why use captions?

Not cheating, but not needed with good sound. If you have a keen ear the subtitles just tend to get in the way and can become a hindrance to your play due to information over load.

That said I've been known to play with them, even with good sound. They *can* help out but these days I tend to ignore them and trust my ear. Every second I spend reading subtitles is a second something has to land a hit on me.

BTW I don't know if some of you guys have bad hearing or what but I regularly hear things like growling tanks and witches long before the subtitles pop up. In fact sometimes I hear things without ever seeing a subtitle for it.

Subtitles also do not provide information about zombies standing around the map...and for good reason. Subtitles aren't going to give you any tips on when you should turn/melee either. Last but not least they do not give you any information about the musical cues in the game (aside from "incoming attack"). Experienced players listen out for musical cues and know what they mean.

Anyway my advice is basically to trust your ears. Turn the subtitles off and rely fully on your ears. That'll make you a better player for sure.

It's not cheating. Some people consider wearing TBs to be cheating too, but if it were, the game wouldn't have directional sound - it would all be mono.

I do a similar things in Quake III, by forcing all playermodels to be a bright blue TankJR. I also turn off all dynamic lights so it's dead easy to see the models on the bright map. Call it cheating all you like but it's an ingame option...

On the other hand, moves like crescendo skipping and spawn glitching, which I HAVE seen pulled off by GB clans in public games, I WOULD consider cheating. Haven't you ever noticed that in public games, you will practically never see a team of any less than four GBs, and that they will relentlessly kick people until they can get a full team of four? There's a reason they do it; so all four of them can pull off their bitch moves and play like assholes. I haven't met one full team of GBs in a public game that actually played properly; and whenever we encounter a team with only 1-3 GBs, we wiped them.

    Not cheating.

In agreement to everything said above, some people are either completely deaf or have troubles hearing. The Captions make it possible for them to play, or easier for them if they can hear but not so well.

And anyway, you hear and see the warnings at the same time if your senses are good.
And everybody can choose to turn on the Captions. Some just don't.
