Its actually cheaper to contract some of these things out than pay the troops salary and benefits to do them all. Almost all landscaping, bus drivers , chow hall workers, etc. are contracters now. Hell even the cops at our gates (Tinker AFB, OK) are now contactors, the USAF Security Police patrol the base though.
Most military guys get their share of shitty details at some point, but the contractors are here to stay, at least stateside.

Repo has the answer. Contractors are cheap. Tricare and all the other expenses the government has to pay for even an E-1 is pretty daunting. Not to mention many places have manpower issues, at least at the enlisted level.

Contractors must compete for contracts. Competition means lower margins, means lower prices.

    Side note, just for Repo:

I was running through a list of one-line -107 and -202 reports today for an A-10 contract and found this little gem:

FOD #2 ENG INGESTED TECHNICAL ORDER. COMP DMG.

(Translation for everyone else--Somebody wasn't paying attention, and left his tech order--the plane manual--lying in front of the engine and it got sucked through and did around $300k in damage)

Seen what happens after a refuel T.O. is left in the left intake lip of an F-15 on a quickturn. After start it slowly made its way to the stator blades, but when he was cruising down the runway the book shifted and went in. There were bits of shredded paper stuck everywhere in the augmentor. Motor was trashed.

Nellis has one of the better base improvement folks...straight from the prison next to the base. In fact I spent a year there and never knew what the prison was for (i.e. federal etc). The guys wearing tan pants and white t-shirts kept the base well manicured/clean as hell though.

And the best thing to do to keep yourself from most of the shitty jobs...stay out of sight.

Out of curiousity, what do you do? Me I am a crew chief now on the F-22 doing my rotation 2 on 2 off 3 on etc. as a supervisor at the alert facility, waiting for the klaxon to sceam...

I'm an engineer. Contractor working for WR-ALC, as well as Ogden. We have contracts to analyze and improve the maintenance for F-15, T-38, A-10, and B-52. I'm the only non-AF guy in the office. The rest are career maintainers or pilots/WSOs. It's quite a group of guys.

I'm debating joining the AF or reserves, but I want a guaranteed flying spot (which I think I could get--helps to know people), but I don't want to be stuck flying trash haulers or something like that. Dad flew F-4's and F-15E's, I want to be a fighter pilot.

Hell, I already know half of the songs.
