Main reason I like linux: When I'm working on a Windows machine infested with viruses I don't have to worry about my PC catching anything. Linux makes my life a lot easier when I have to work on those machines. Also, I can leave them connected to the internet all of the time and don't have to worry about becoming a member of a bot net. My main concern is getting rooted, and I avoid that by not pissing people off and staying up to date!

For me it is Linux on the desktop, and BSD on the server. I only use Windows when I have to these days.
At the end of the day though, the vast majority of reasons for Windows getting virussed out of existance is down to the end user, and that they lack enough common sense to smell a (usually very obvious) rat.

Windows is targeted because it is 90+% of the population. If you were looking to gain control over a large number of PCs what platform would you write your virus for?

This isn't just an end user problem. There are a lot of "zombie" computers out there on the net. Some of these PCs just sit there all day sending requests to random IP addresses and when they find a Windows machine they automatically try to gain access to the machine through the use of an exploit (sometimes many are tried). So if you don't have the latest patch, or no patch exists yet it is possible for any machine running Windows to become infected at any time.
