Re: new amp
I never thought I'd find a guitar I liked better than my Paul. Until my wife (who apparently loves me more than life itself) bought me a Paul Reed Smith. It's not every day that your spouse drops more than 2 grand on an electric twanger. Anyhoo, my PRS is quite simply the most versatile guitar I have ever owned. It can chunk like a Paul, it can tinkle like a Tele. It's... orgasmic to play.

But to get back on target, if you are looking for an affordable amp with great effects, don't overlook the Roland Cube 60. They are a great compact gigging amp that can really deliver a lot of sound for such a compact unit.

You can find them on eBay for around $250-300. Great amp for the price.

I would agree with heavey.....the thing you look for, especially for a beginner guitar player, and beginner amp, is you want something that will keep you interested from the start. An amp like the Roland Cube or the Line6 Spyder series, is a great tool to mess around with, because of all the built in effects and presets.
Me personally, when you feel it's time to step up into the big leagues, i dont even want an amp with a mater volume or overdrive chanel. I want 1 chanel with ASS loads of head room (head room is when you can turn up an amp REALLY loud and not hear the tubes start to break up, which gives you a distortion sound...aka..overdrive, the amp just stays very clean, and very loud....and that right combination is your best tone), and i will run my effects from my pedal board. (hince again why i play a 65 Fender Twin)

Also don't forget the Vox line of amps. They have modeling amps just like the others and have gotten very good reviews. If you want just a small practice amp for now that you can take anywhere then check out the portable Vox and Line 6 is also coming out with one. Both are modeling amps and can run on batteries or can be plug in if you have an outlet available. The Vox has 11 different voices and the Line 6 will have 6. These are small amps(6 1/2" speaker and 5 watts) but like I said if you want just a good little practice amp with some different sounds added in then these two are the best from what I have been reading. The Vox also has a power saving switch that lets you choose from .5,1.5,and 5 watts(this is also nice when practicing late at night). You can check them both out at Musicians Friend or Guitar Center on line. Both companies make bigger modeling versions up to 100 watts but the'yre not portable. I'm looking to get one of these myself for just practice(the wife is tired of my big amps being in her way and she goes to bed earlier than me so I have to quite earlier with the big amps).

Call me a traditionalist, but I still like my Fender Champion 600 reissue... my step mother has one of the originals from the 50s with most of the electronics still intact. Damn, that thing sings. But for an all-around practice amp, the Vox and Roland multi-amps are solid choices.

I like VOX amps. I am actually considering selling my Cyber Twin SE and buying an AC30 or something... Not sure though.
