Ben there are probably 100's of posts about this same problem. Use the search function to look it up. You will find it at the top of the page right between the help tab and the profile tab. This is a good tool to get familiar with. Check it out.

Okay, I'll skip the dumb shit like telling you not to spam, not to flame and all that stuff, because if you're reading this, it means that the entire staff team are happy that you don't do that already. That's kind of why you're here.

So I'll try and address the grey areas that you might have questions regarding.

Firstly, although you do have basic moderation powers, you shouldn't really need to use them. It's basically due to the way vBulletin's permission system works - as part of your roles, you'll be needing to move, sticky, merge and edit posts, and for some reason you can't just have those toys without getting the infraction toys as well.

It goes without saying that you won't be needing to use them. That's why we've got the moderating team and myself. If you do see anything worthy of moderation, just report it as usual, or if it's urgent, get hold of myself or one of the mods to deal with it. Spambots, I don't mind - there's an infraction for spambots that bans them instantly, so if you see something that's blatantly from a spambot (and do doublecheck, I've made that mistake before...) and there's no-one else online, by all means nail it. Just don't step into anything that involves actual users, because that opens a whole can of worms I don't fancy visiting again.

Secondly, if users start giving you shit (and they will at some point - unfortunately a shiny-coloured name is an invitation for people to bitch at you), don't bite. Just swing me or any of the mods a PM and a link or copy/paste of what you've got and I'll deal with it.

Finally, remember you're representing the forums. We're the biggest and best L4D forum on the net, and you're now part of the public face of that forum. That doesn't mean that everything has to be serious business, just that there are times when you have to hold back a little on what you'd really like to tell someone, and that's not always easy.

Anyway, that's enough of the drill sergeant thing. You're here because you're good, responsible members. Keep it up.

A note about spam bots: A lot of them don't post blatant spam, instead they use "signature spamming". Basically they post something that might be relevant to the thread to spam the link in their signature in the hopes of getting a better rank on google.

Feel free to delete those posts and ban the user as soon as you see them doing something fishy. Lately these make up at least half of the spam on this site.

Our anti-spam scripts keep out most of the bots these days, but a few manage to get through the system. The problem isn't near as bad as it used to be, and the bots that do get through aren't nearly as obvious as the dumb ones. So keep an eye on those new users.
