One Year Aniversary; or How TTP Improved My Life
As of today, TTP has been an important part of my life for a year now.
One year ago, I was but a young teamplayer lost without a home, recently moved into San Antonio, Texas. I played BF2 exclusively, and saw the word "texas" in TTP's server, so thought I'd try it out. It was with great joy and surprise that I found people were actually giving orders, communicating, and working as a team. I quickly grabbed redmako and brought him to the server to play too. It took me a couple weeks, but I got in a squad with one of the TTP regs (I wanna say it was Ranger or NHBird) who was talking about the forums, and so I thought I'd check them out, being the natural forum-whore I am.
Less than a month later, I had a couple hundred posts, and bought 2142 at TTP's suggestion. I was hooked, and BF2 quickly fell to the wayside. The game ran better, the setting was crisper, and air power wasn't overpowered. I played the hell out of that game for the first few months, putting in huge chunks of time even when the server was empty. This also led to my meeting of AK-99, along with the rest of the regs. The two of us became fast friends, and within two months of my getting 2142, we had recruited Turtlesexx, Spike113, and Ironstomach to create the Battlefield Hobos clan.
Since that time, I have accrued over 40 days of time on the forums (which averages to almost 3 hours a day on the forums), over 6000 posts, and hundreds of hours in TTP servers. All time which I would very willingly spend again in the same manner.
But this isn't just about what I've done, it's about thanking TTP for what it has done for me. It helped me to get over moving halfway across the country, it's given me leadership skills, and provided a creative outlet. It has even sparked more interest in politics and current events, thanks to the discussions that occur on these boards.
So, once more, I must say thanks. Thanks to all of the people who give time and money to make and keep TTP what it is. Thanks to the regs which keep the servers populated and fun. Thanks to everyone who contributes in some way to any and all things TTP.
It's been a helluva year. Here's hoping that the next one is ever better.

Re: One Year Aniversary; or How TTP Improved My Life
I think in general though when people think of a gaming community they think...oh they are all uninformed, sheepish leet speakers. I do believe that TTP has smashed that stereotype.
I doubt many forums have 20+ page threads going on the 2008 election (if you add up all the different threads having to do with the election, and this is only the primaries!!!!). Or actual have intelligent debates about real life issues. Even the leadership qualities that one develops while constantly being exposed to our level of game play. Not to mention the amount of knowledge that you can glean about computers and components. I am trully suprised at how much i have picked up in the year and a half I have been here.
When I applied to Cornell, I actually told them about my experience with working with people on other time zones, managing a server and being a leader over all. I will hear from them this week.
Congrats on your 1st TTP birthday

Re: One Year Aniversary; or How TTP Improved My Life
Benandorf,
Congratulations!
As some know I am one of the the older members of TTP. I am glad to hear a younger member say that TTP provides an avenue for simultaneous fun and learning.
Older people worry about where the next leaders of society will come from. Over the last year I immersed myself at TTP and also had a lot of fun and learning. One of the many things that I learned is that the younger generation is bright. With confidence I can say that on a whole you all are smarter than my generation was and are more aware of world issues. You guys rock and I welcome your leadership as I grow even older!

Don't forget that you talked the owners of the site into hosting a "king" smiley - cmon man.....
Damn glad you're here Ben.
You guys absolutely should list TTP (even if you don't name us) as an experience source....., the experience and insight you gain here, while not 100% transferable, can be a good into into almost any social situation - expecially akward/high pressure one's.
Pot - I'll be interested to hear how your application goes.....
When you guys grow up and get real jobs after being at fancy schools - don't forget about us!
