    The dude's house looks nice. The dude that actually owns the car, I mean.

    For reference, people start coming up with hard evidence the shitbag's lying on page 24. The final blow comes on page 32 when the car's actual owner posts a picture of the car in his garage, with a piece of paper containing his username and the date in the foreground.

    Owned.

    Video Game Free Speech Ruling Aftermath

    On Monday we discussed the U.S. Supreme Court's decision that a California law banning the sale or rental of violent video games to minors was in violation of the First Amendment's free speech protection. By now, both sides of the debate have had a chance to respond to the Court's ruling. Congressman Joe Baca and CA State Senator Leland Yee pledged to continue the fight for stricter controls on the distribution of violent games, while others cried, "think of the children." Game industry groups were unsurprisingly pleased with the decision, but warned that this won't be the end of it, and asked lawmakers to stop wasting time with such legislation in the future. An article at the NY Times points out how the ruling highlights the lack of clear evidence supporting either side of the debate, and Time notes the Supreme Court's double standard, asking, "Why does the court treat violent images and sexual images so differently?" Finally, an editorial at Gamasutra reminds us that even though most game developers are breathing a sigh of relief, many would like to see the industry shift toward something more creative and meaningful than violence.

    What sickens me about this is the response by the legislators to the Supreme Court's ruling basically stating, "It's ok if you strike down our laws as unconsitutional, we'll just make new ones violating people's rights and they'll have to fight them in court again". As a resident of the state of CA, I find this trend of lawmakers to continue to pass these nanny state laws at the expense of the rights of the people within the state to be extremely disgusting.

    Furthermore, like most of the wacky laws passed here, the reasoning behind this was based on touchy feely thinking, not on actual research. Anyone who's ever taken a basic statistics class will tell you:
    Correlation != Causation
    (Needless to say, it's fairly alarming that 2 of the SC justices dissented, just the fact that the law MAJORLY failed strict scrutiny plus the fact that the research the law was based on was so shitty should have been enough evidence already to rule against CA)
    However, I don't think actual research has ever come into play in the politics in this state. Pretty much the only thing needed to get a bill passed is "Think of the children!". Worked for the gun control laws which include requiring handguns to microstamp cases on firing (nevermind the studies that showed how incredibly useless this technology is). It also seemed to work for Proposition 8 (anti gay-marriage bill, even though that was actually voted in by the people). Garbage like this really makes me consider moving out of state, maybe I'll move to Oregon or Nevada and rid myself of these ridiculous taxes while I'm at it.
