The dslr's are really expensive and it'll be hard to find a good one under $1000 I'm guessing. They are great camera's for sure, but they are rather pricy. Best thing to do I'd say is get either a normal SLR camera for now that would be cheaper and allow you to get the full feel for photography a little better.
If you are going the route of being a pro using only digital though, just another Canon might have to suffice for now, say a mid-range one that'll go around $500 or so. Still kind of pricy, but if you want a good camera you'll have pay a good price...unless you know some people who know some people who know some people who ki...nevermind. :2

Actually I just checked Canon's sight and the Rebel has actually come down a bit:

I've never actually had one since I could never afford one, but I hear they are great cameras. You might be able to get your hands on one of these and upgrade to a more expensive one later once you graduate and get some experience/money.
Best online value is even better:

A pretty decent DSLR camera for $300 is a great deal, especially if you already have some additional lenses.

Re: Camera
I have a Nikon D70s, which I love. It only has 6.0 mps but I deal...
I also have a Nikon N80.
I stick to the Nikon because the lens are interchangeable with out haveing to get an attachment. Which means when I get the next camera, I just have to go for the body.
I say save up the money and go for the good DSLR...maybe check out some used point and clicks ones to get you by in the meantime...olympus isn't bad for those...

They go into all kinds of depth, even giving you color correction charts and the like.
The Nikon D40 and the Cannon Rebel XT are about dead even. $600 will get you one or the other and its matching 18-55mm lens. The primary difference between the two is the D40 has no internal focus driver. Not a big deal, because all newer nikon lenses have their motor built into the lens. I played with both, and I liked the feel of the D40 over the rebel.
If you jump to a 10mp, then you're at the D40X and the XTi and a decent $800 for the same body+lens deal.
Personally, I chose the D40 because of the deal that Wolf Camera was running at the time. I bought the lower camera, but paid $200 for a package deal that included a 55-200 lens, a case, and a couple photography DVD's. The lens alone retailed for over $200, so it was quite a steal, and worth the downgrade in the camera.
If you already have a stack of cannon glass, I'd go with cannon. But do your homework before you go buy.
